Default Skyline Small Pet Terrarium Marrakesh

Hi,

Does anyone else have this cage?

I read online that pee can seep down the side under the glass base.

I was wondering if anyone has sealed along the gap, if so what with or has anyone used a hemp mat to line the base

Thanks

I haven't had one. I'd have thought with enough substrate in that wouldn't be an issue at all. The base of my cage never gets wet with plenty of substrate and a litter tray I think it's the front probably where the glass panel slides up. But probably just not enough substrate.

I've had sand and dust seep out from the bottom of the front and back panels of my Marrakesh, so I expect pee could too. The grooves in the wood where the glass slots in used to get caked in dust which I just scraped out, but pee could easily ruin the wood. Some people have used aquarium silicone sealant to seal the edges. A hemp mat slightly bigger than the base of the cage, turned up at the edges might absorb enough to protect the wood. I suppose it depends on the hamster's peeing habits.

Thanks guys, I just didn't want to ruin an expensive cage. Yes, it would make sense if people didn't have deep substrate.
I will see what I think the best option is when it arrives and i put it together.

Ooh you're getting one - exciting! Yes I don't think the sliding up glass panel is necessary - it's probably intended for people who don't have much substrate. Easier to do it from the top - I did wonder about sealing that glass panel inside but that sounds a fiddle. And not easy to find hamster safe aquarium sealant. I had a look once and some that say pet safe are still very smelly.

I would think a hemp mat on the base would be a good idea - if you have substrate on top. The only time I had a hemp mat get pee soaked was when a house was directly on top of it with only a thin layer of substrate underneath.

Any aquarium sealant would have to be fully cured outside before being used - you don't want those fumes to be inside the house for the sake of anyone involved as silicon while still curing does produce some fairly toxic fumes!

That being said, once fully cured silicon sealant if 100% silicon with no additives is extremely safe and doesn't have any fumes. Sometimes you'll even find similar products in hardware stores but it has to be 100% silicon with no mold inhibiting additives and such which would make it unsafe for any pet including hamsters. Again, these all have to be fully cured outside before use - at the bare minimum 24 hours but in some cases it can take 2 or 3 days.

I know, very excited. I did wonder if the pee was a problem when people hadn't put much substrate in.
I think I could do hemp mat with lots of substate on it.

I was worried about what sealant to use if I went down that route. I know people do use it, but which one and even then is it safe.

I think I will stick with the hemp mat first and if that doesn't work maybe have to come up with a plan b.

I think with this cage, worse case scenario is that I would just have to empty everything out and undo the cage it to clean it if the pee got under the glass.

If it helps I have never had pee at the bottom of the cage What helps there is the house being on legs rather than on the base of the cage - with the litter tray inside. The only area of pee is where the litter tray is - if they miss eg. And with hemp mat under the substrate as well it would soak anything up if the substrate didnt.

With putting the house on legs with the litter tray inside I have only had short legs so the house doesn't sit too high up. Long enough for a good space underneath the house in case they try and tunnel under it - maybe about 2" legs. I did get the rodipet legs once that slot onto their houses, but I cut them down to the size I wanted - which means needing a saw as they are quite chunky. It was almost easier just using the wood dowels I used before - I could cut those with my little saw that is not much more than a bread knife! And then just glue them onto the outside of the house.

I'm still in two minds whether to seal this - i just wiped it down with a mix of vinegar/water and that seaped under, I had to turn the whole thing upside down to release the pressure so it could dry and not stain the wood. If that hadn't worked I was going to have to undo it all to dry it off. It's the only fault, otherwise I love this cage, really well made and solidly built.
I know going forward I could put the hemp mat there, but I'm thinking it might be best to just seal it now before I put everything in it.

Is this the sort of sealant i would need to be using?

or

and do i really need to do the sealing oustide as I have got the cage in place now and no way am i going to be able to move it on my own?

Thanks.
