Re: Skyline Small Pet Terrarium Marrakesh
Looking great Luna, can’t wait to see a little one enjoying the lovely home you’ve made
I agree you’re not being neurotic about the ceramic things, I put anything heavy on a shelf as just about everything on the substrate gets knocked over or buried sooner or later! Chineseys are the worst for that, they have to burrow under everything just because it’s there lol! I put legs on my houses & wheels on a shelf too.

Re: Skyline Small Pet Terrarium Marrakesh
Thanks everyone for the advice. I have moved everything around again and ordered another platform.
Once I have everything in place I will post updated photos.
Maybe stupid question, how big a gap do you leave under the water spout for smaller hamsters? I want to attach a water bottle to the side of the cage but I might wait till I actually have the hamster for that.

I had no idea so measured Edwina's water bottle spout. It's 4cm from spout to base. All my dwarfs like a water bowl as well so have both, bottle and bowl.

Re: Skyline Small Pet Terrarium Marrakesh
Update: I put another platform on the right for the wheel and the toadstool
Marrakesh Whole.jpg
New platform added to the right hand side.
Marrakesh right side.jpg
I already had a platform on the left, thinking of swapping the glass dish for something lighter
Marrakesh Left Side.jpg
The log is supported by the cork log underneath on the left side and the platform on the right.
The part on the photo is not supported, just on the substrate, do you think this is still ok? The pic is deceiving, there is probably about 4 inches of substrate

Please let me know your thoughts and if you think anything still doesn't look safe. I just feel little dwarf hamsters are so more fragile than syrians.

Re: Skyline Small Pet Terrarium Marrakesh
It does look really nice, if the glass dish is on a platform it should be fine, it might be better to have something lighter if you want to really err on the side of safety but I wouldn’t worry, how deep is it, hard to tell from the photo.
I think the safety of the log will depend on the individual ham & it’s habits tbh, most of my Russians haven’t tended to move things like that with burrowing but some might, not sure about a robo, one of my Chinese has two quite big cork tunnels in her cage & I often can’t even find them so if you had a ham with those kind of burrowing habits maybe not quite so safe1

Re: Skyline Small Pet Terrarium Marrakesh
Edwina has a similar glass dish sand bath on a platform (Ferplast guinea pig house) and it is absolutely fine.
Is it the grapevine that is unsupported and you're asking about? I've never had one of those so have no idea how heavy or light they are.
The set up looks beautiful and very inviting. I want to be a hamster in your house.

Thanks Cypher, I think it is about 4-5 cm deep. It's pretty hard for me to move, so should be ok, it is just very heavy.
I guess like anything I do with my cages I will observe what my hamster does when I get him/her and move anything that needs to be moved. I'm so excited. Hopefully in the next few weeks I will have a new hammy.

Thanks Ria, I will maybe leave it and see how it goes.
Yes, I did mean the grapevine, I had a mental block as to what it was called, so I called it log!!! They are heavy, but it is supported on two parts. I guess I will just observe.
Syrians just seem so more solid I just can't imagine how light and small a little hamster is going to feel in comparison, I'm just worried something is going to squash them. I have never even held one. I held a Chinese hamster about 35 years ago, other than that it's just been syrians!!!! I thought Star was tiny, no one could ever tell how small she was, but she was so small, it was a shock when she arrived as I had only seen photos of her and you couldn't tell.
I'm probably being over cautious as this poor girl on instagram just had to have her dwarf put to sleep as it got stuck in a window on one of those wooden houses (the type that they put a wooden cross in it). I have something similar for my syrians and they are fine as they can barely get their nose through the hole. I would never have thought about it being a danger for a smaller hamster. Just so sad.

Re: Skyline Small Pet Terrarium Marrakesh
It looks amazing Perfectly sensible to support heavy things underneath- I do it as well. The vine branch should be fine if one end is supported by the cork log underneath.
