Default Syrian bin cage help

We are currently revamping our Syrian's bin cage - he seems bored. He had an escape a couple of weeks ago and has been doubly bored since then. Maybe the freedom and night free to do as he pleased has depressed him in his cage, I don't know. So in an effort to cheer him up we are redoing the entire thing.

The problem is that this little guy loves to bury himself in his bedding. No matter what we put in there, he digs and tunnels. He doesn't like any type of house or enclosure we've put in it. He just dugs under them or wads himself up in the corner next to it. Any enrichment accessories we've added he ignores, except his wheel. My son would like to buy another bin to attach to it so he can do nothing but dig and then put enrichment activities in the second. We have a huge plastic storage tote that we converted for him. If we buy another what is the best way to attach them? He tries to escape constantly and I need to be sure the tunnels are secure.

It might be easiest to attach them in a way so that the bedding bin is on the bottom and the activity one is on the top. You'd need to connect them via tubes but there wouldn't really be space for him to escape into.

Another option is to connect them with PVC pipes instead of the traditional tubes. There's an old post [here] that talked about it a bit.

I've just connected two bin cages with a tube bought at pets@home. I cut the holes with a cutting disc and filed the edges smooth. Needs to be quite a tight fit which will hold it in place securely. I think its better to have the bins next to each other for easy access.

You can buy official connection pieces from ferplast that connect to bars without having to cut a hole. The pets at home tubes are made by ferplast.
