Sand bath - suggestion what to use
Dear All,
I have a new hamster Nutmeg, and would like to set him up a sand bath. He seems to be using one corner as a toilet, although he uses a few places, more than half of the wet bedding is here.
I have a large quantity of white aquarium sand which is washed and not dusty. It got caught in the filter and showed up detritus too much so have no plans to use it in another aquarium.
For the actual bath, what do you think would be best? I have a few ceramic dishes, tupperware of various sizes, margerine tub? How should I encourage him to use it, should I put the wet bedding in with it?
Thank you all

Re: Sand bath - suggestion what to use
I'm not sure if aquarium sand is safe for hamsters tbh, you might do better to err on the side of safety & get some chinchilla sand (not dust) as not all sands are suitable.
The container can be anything really but needs to be big & deep enough for them to have a bit of a dig in & move around a bit unless you just want to use it as a corner toilet in which case you could use something smaller then maybe make a larger sand bath for digging in elsewhere in the cage.
I wouldn't use a margarine tub, that kind of plastic is easily chewed & can be quite sharp so best avoided, unless Nutmeg is a determined chewer a tupperware container should be fine, I've used similar, I also use salt pigs & bird baths like this one https://www.amazon.co.uk/Hagen-Visio...QSE53WQ790GXJR although I keep dwarf hams so not sure if that would be big enough for a Syrian.

Re: Sand bath - suggestion what to use
I used an old casserole dish, it’s a small one big enough for 1 Syrian hamster or apple crumble for 2. And I use child safe dry play sand
