My dwarf was diabetic when i got him from pets@home adoption centre but they hadn't noticed his excessive drinking/peeing so i tested him and got very helpful advice on this forum. He was quite crazy and aggressive but has calmed down a lot, still bites though.
He eats the Rodipet Hybrid mix which is suitable for diabetic dwarves and he likes it so haven't tried Purr but will check it out, thanks.

Papier mache sounds interesting. What kind of glue/binding material do you use inbetween the layers? Not too tasty i hope or it will get nibbled up, lol.
They have a lot to do yet their cages look bare compared to Nikos. How did you test for diabetes? If that food suits him may as well stick to it rather than upset him.

I'm using flour and water mix...so simple I know but at least I know it's safe if it's ingested. Personally I don't think a mix of flour and water is tasty but who knows?

Looking forward to see your handcrafted hamster items.

I bought Keto-Diastix on Amazon, put him in a small plastic box where he peed, took him out and tested his urine with a diastix. I put him on a healthy diet soon as i got him and aside from his excessive drinking/peeing he's hamstering about like any healthy hamster. He was overweight but is now in better shape and likes running on his wheel. Good way to get the surplus grams off.

A decent environment makes a big difference to a hamster and there is something very rewarding in adopting a hamster no one else wanted as you know yourself.

I will post a piccy of different items so if anyone is feeling crafty they can have a few ideas.

I'll keep the keto-diastix in mind. From my understanding dwarf species are at a higher risk compared to Syrians? My robo has a tiny bit of dehydrated apple but not very often so I doubt I need to worry but definitely something worth knowing.

Aww I'm glad he's doing better. I would be gutted if any of mine ended up with diabetes as I love the wooden accessories. But health comes first. Rather change to plastic than deal with possible resp or skin issues from the mould.

Pic 1: Ghost's
Pic 2: Athena's
Pic 3: Lilith's
Pic 4: Niko's

(Hopefully they'll appear in that order).

Oh wow! Your hamsters will never get bored. They must feel ever so comfortable in their homes.

Well hopefully. Well they've got a bit of everything. Sand and soil Digging box (or toilet), dried herbs to pick at when they like. Tunnele, bridges somewhere cool to lie and plenty of bedding (each have a minimum of 6" each. That's a lot of bedding)

Athena loves the digging boxes but doesn't understand that the stand for her wheel is buried in the sand and she can't remove it.

Ghost is pretty lazy and is happy to just have deep bedding to burrow.

Lilith and Niko are in everything having a whale of a time.

Also, all 4 have successfully taken to water bowls!!! Took Niko a while as he kept jumping in it...

Bless. Got Niko a tealight holder as a water bowl and has now got the idea.

The soil is just coconut coir. You can get a brick of it for £3 in the reptile section of P@H.

Cleaned everyone out and took me 7 hours!!!!
It was more of a deep clean though. Anything plastic, resin, ceramic, glass and metal was taken out for a good thorough wash. I sifted through all the bedding salvaging what I could. Thoroughly washed the bases down. Added a nice thick layer of hemp...at least 4 inches...I went a bit mad. Added in the salvaged bedding in a corner to make it extra deep for burrowing. Moved some stuff around, adding some new things. I quite like their new setups even though at the end I was losing the will to live

Anyways...I have managed to get through half a bag of aubiose...I hope it does the job or I'm back to the drawing board.
