Which is Better: Water Bottles or Water Bowls?
Hi everyone!
Which is better: water bottles or water bowls? I recently had to switch to water bowls, as my hamster ripped off the spout of her water bottle. I think she did that because she was frustrated, because I had been noticing that it had not been working very well lately. Also, I cannot find the spout, do you think she'll eat the little balls that are in there??
What is your opinion: water bottles or water bowls?

It very much depends on the hamster. If your hamster is spout chewing and overdrinking too much water that is bad for them so I would always go with a bowl then. Bowls have a drawback though that you do need to make sure they are checked frequently as they do get contaminated with bedding when the hamster digs around. Do whatever is best to stop them overdrinking and spout chewing. I don't think she will have eaten the balls or the spout. It will likely be in her store. Bottles need checked every day as well to freshen the water and also to ensure the water is flowing freely. Just run your finger over the spout.

I don't think it is a case that either is better, it's what works best for you or your hamsters. I use water bottles, I tried water bowls, neither of my hamster took to them, so I stuck with bottles. Both have pluses and minuses.

Re: Which is Better: Water Bottles or Water Bowls?
Okay, thank you!
I do not think she is overdrinking, if anything she was probably underdrinking with the water bottle - she seems to be drinking a LOT more with the bowls. I don't have a problem with the water getting contaminated with bedding because the bowls are on her platform where there is no bedding.
I didn't run my finger over the spout until the balls got stuck and then she went without water for 3 days.... Now I always check it. The past few times I checked it it wasn't flowing very well...
My hamster has not jumped in her water bowl - yet, at least - probably because she hates water.

Re: Which is Better: Water Bottles or Water Bowls?
I'm using a very shallow bowl for a tiny baby ham that I have as that is what he had at the pet shop and I'm not sure he knows how to use a bottle yet however I also have a bottle for him too. All my other hamsters have two bottles just in case one gets jammed. They seem to be ok wih bottles.

Re: Which is Better: Water Bottles or Water Bowls?
I try to provide both. The bottle is always there in case I get busy one night, but the bowl is a lot more natural to drink out of and a lot more quiet. I would strongly suggest offering the bowl in gradually to a hamster who has never used a bowl to be safe. Some know what a bowl is and how to use it right off the bat (such as my current robo) but some don’t understand them (such as the guinea pig I pet sat a week or so ago).

How would you suggest going about introducing a bowl? I'm currently using a tea light holder as he's so small but as I've mentioned above he drank from it then desired to jump in it. (By the way he was fine. Wasn't really wet either. He dried him self off and wet for a sand bath).

Re: Which is Better: Water Bottles or Water Bowls?
I'm finding water bottles very temperamental. I have a glass bottle which seems to stop working ever so often. I also have a bottle which won't stop dripping.
