Plastic shelves to make or buy
I have secured a bargain in black Friday sales on the savic XL gerbilarium (it's for my mice not Eddie so it's great for them). I need to replace the wire floor with plastic shelves but the savic and ferplast ones are too big. I'm asking here if anyone knows of any other ready made ones? Or an easy hack to make some. I want plastic as mice pee on everything and I am not particularly skilled at applying plastikote. The mouse forum I am on aren't as savvy as you lovely folks so hoped someone might be able to help?

You could ask around family and friends to see if anyone has a Dremel electric cutting tool to cut them to the correct size for you. It's easy to do with the right tool.

Use the cutting disc for plastic. I always draw out the cutting line with a permanent marker then score the plastic on No 10 setting and then cut on No 15 setting. I then file the edges smooth with a file attachment. You could drill holes in the plastic and attach to the wire with cable ties. Once in place, its easy to cut off the excess length with a wire cutter.
Sorry if you know all that already. I'm not trying to sound patronising but i'm one of these grannys who are more likely to be seen with a drill than a whisk.

Re: Plastic shelves to make or buy
I honestly have used my Dremel once, failed and shoved it in a cupboard so your advice is very much welcome. Thanks Ria. The new cage should be here in a few days. I'll let you know how I get on.

Could you just cover the wire shelves with hemp mat? It would need replacing if pee'd on though.
Prevue make these - not sure if they would fit

Or just get wood ones and paint them with a couple of coats of plastikote Ranchhouse cages make wood ones in all shapes and sizes and they come with good fittings to screw to the bars.

Re: Plastic shelves to make or buy
My mice are prolific destroyers of anything grassy like hemp so I would need to replace hemp mats on the daily.
Also, I can't paint for toffee. It would gloop on, I'd miss bits and just make a general mess of things. I say I'm 'too free spirited' lol.
I'm going to try with some plastic trays and my Dremel once the cage comes. Though I got an email from the supplier today that it may be a longer wait than expected.

Re: Plastic shelves to make or buy
Ha ha I know what you mean, but even I managed plastikote. It is very thin and easy to paint on a thin coat - takes about 10 minutes. It's just a little pot and I use a quarter inch regular paint brush. You can get coloured ones so you can see which bit you've painted over before. They really are wipe clean after two coats. I do one coat (10 minutes) then a second coat the next day and it's dry in a couple of hours after that.

I definitely couldn't use a coloured one because the you would be able to see that I got it on the walls, down the dresser, in my hair, up my nose... #cannotbetrustedwithanythingremotelycraftyastheywi lldestroyeverythingwithinthevicinity.
