Default Hamster Cage Setup Using Recycled Items.

I have been working on this idea for a while now. I wanted to setup a hamster cage with items that would have just gone in the recycling. I wanted to create this because I often find myself giving advice on how to add enrichment to hamster enclosures to people who do not have a lot of money, especially children. The idea also cropped up in a conversation with Schwartzie and I know Ria has talked about this too and she created a bin cage with recycled items in it.

I liked this idea partly because you are recycling items but also I hope it shows how enriching a hamsters life does not always have to cost a fortune.

I also wanted to see how much buying the essential items would actually cost.

Having done this first one, I plan on doing another one next year to see what I would improve.

I hope it can help/inspire others.

Thank you for that and the video. I hope that many people will watch it and get inspired by it.

You could safe further by using toilet paper strips instead of buying bedding.

I have sold my spare bin cage to a rescue and was able to sell it cheaply to only cover my cost because recycling saves money and i'm not looking for a profit or payment for labour.
I'm on the look out now for suitable, second hand storage boxes to upcycle into hamster homes because the rescue would like more.

Ria that is totally awesome. Go you.
That is a great idea re the toilet paper, I will try to remember that for next time. I'm just partial to the paper wool as it takes me back to when I had a hamster as a child.

A year later than planned I did another video using recycling:

Setting Up The Savic Plaza Hamster Cage On a Budget | Cosmic Hamsters - YouTube

I will start a new thread about it

I've added a whole playlist on my youtTube channel for videos that use recycling:

Using Recycling - YouTube

I had no idea I had done so many

Anyway hope it can help people on how to add enrichment to their hamsters life without it costing a fortune

Great videos Luna - and shows people you can use all sorts for a hamster cage without spending much (and demonstrates the shoebox house!).

Thanks Serendipity
Yes, I started the whole 'recycle' series because of the conversations on here. There used to be so many conversations around not having a lot of money but people wanting to add enrichment to their hamsters lives, it doesn't seem to crop up so much these days, or maybe I am just not as active on here so not seen those conversations, and yes the shoe box does make an appearance

Much easier than trying to explain how to make a shoebox house!
