Re: Looking for ideas
Ria...I view you and others on this forum like family...I am someone who wants to be honest and wants to support those I care about. I’ve been following this thread in excitement and a little worry about the size and depth of the tank. You influence and inspire people with your knowledge and support and I am doing the same for you. You kept me accountable during my researching and advised me on many aspects of caring for a hamster. Is there no way that you can’t increase the depth? I know you are wanting to wait to see what the hamster does but by having the option to burrow Gordon will begin to take on his natural instincts and begin doing what he was made to do. This is me supporting you as a friend.

Re: Looking for ideas
Schwartzie, yes i can increase the depth of the substrate which is currently 6-7 in and yes we can increase the height of the tank with a raised roof. This option is still there if needed.
Gordon can burrow and make tunnels now but he needs to discover his natural instincts first. For all I know, he may be so used to a confined space that he may be scared of space.
I work with people who have been institutionalised hence have real difficulty adapting to "normality".
Gordon hasn't left his sand pit yet so I will wait and see what happens next and take it from there.
Also, Henry has never burrowed. Another thing I've noticed was that there was no change in Henry's behaviour after I had upgraded his cage to a bigger one. He displayed no stress behaviour in either cage.
I believe that not every hamster needs or wants a huge cage but that they will tell us if and when they do. Hamsters are individuals like humans and I for myself live happily in a small, colourful and cosy house.

Aww I am so pleased that Gordon was still there waiting for you. He looks so gorgeous and after being in a store for so long it makes me a bit emosh that he has come home to you. You were meant to be together. X

Yes, I felt emotional when I arrived at the pet shop and he was still there. I really don't know why I had set my heart on this particular hamster. Now we need to get to know each other so I can find out how he wants to live his life.
All I know at the moment is that he seems to love sand and he has discovered the joys of Whimzees. All new to him.
My OH said that all we need now is a Thomas. Eh? What are you on about I asked. Thomas the tank! Henry, Gordon....

Re: Looking for ideas
Gordon has gone underground.
Briefly saw a nose poking out from the cellar then heard a lot of rustling and moving around underground.
I had to secure the pyrex (it fitted) sand pit better and put it on top of another Ferplast guinea pig house minus the front panel. Peace of mind for me so nothing heavy can topple over should he decide to tunnel underneath sand pit. Have increased substrate to ca 8in.
Must go to work....

Re: Looking for ideas
Eh? Is it me or is Gordon a Robo? Did I miss something?!
I have a soft spot for this breed, because mine's one.
And I am soooo glad Gordon was waiting for you. Glad to hear he has gone underground, sounds like he does like burrowing.

Re: Looking for ideas
Yes, Gordon is a Robo and I know nothing about this breed of hamsters so need a crash course. Any essential information would be greatly appreciated.
He made a tunnel and just poked his cute little head out of the entrance then zoomed back down again.
Henry is a Syrian hamster so a Robo is totally new to me.
