I think the samla has less because of its sloping sides so the Alaska probably works out bigger to be honest. I’d say a minimum of 800 square inches for a Syrian but I’d personally go bigger. Syrians actually need over 8-10 inches of bedding to burrow properly, they can’t really in only 6 inches and can only dig down a bit as opposed to building proper burrows.

I would get the Barney cage then I have that. Yes you can easily get 6" of bedding in it - more if you want because it has narrow bar spacing so the bedding doesn't fall out. It is rare for a hamster to bar chew in a 100cm cage and harder for them to do it with the narrow 7mm bars also. They tend to bar chew in cages that are too small.

It costs about £15 more than the Alaska but it comes with a good sized house and a good shelf so you only really need a wheel and toys. There is plenty of floor space as it also has a good depth - 54cm. Loads of room for enrichment in it. I actually prefer barred cages as you can attach things to the roof and bars for extra enrichment, the ventilation is good and it's easier to interact with your hamster with a front opening door.

If you like diy you could make a really good wooden labyrinth house to go in the Barney! Also the wood shelves and house need painting with Plasti-kote waterproofing petsafe paint - so they're wipe clean.

It looks like the Barney cage is the best option! I don’t have enough room for a detolf, but if I did I would get it! Thank you for all the advice once again

I’m not located near you unfortunately, but if I was I would take up your offer. I’ll buy it from zooplus

Just mentioned on the other thread - the Barney is normally about £54 - they've taken the discount off at the moment, but it might go back to £54 (or less) in a few days! Although last time I waited for them to do that, the price stayed high for ages!
