Bin cage size?
95cm by 35cm.
It's currently her playpen but she seems happier in the pen that her cage.
She runs on her wheel more there, it's the same wheel.
And she climbs up her bars for attention in her cage.
She only does the bar climbing and little chews when I'm in the room.
I can hear her from my bedroom rustling about but if I get up for water she wants attention.
Her cage is currently an Alaska cage.
Is this an ok size for a bin cage?

Re: Bin cage size?
Is it the Wham 133L bin?
The dimensions work put pretty much the same as the Alaska, just in a different shape. Personally I think it’s a bit narrow for a Syrian but I use the same sized bin for 2 of my dwarf hamsters.

Re: Bin cage size?
It's a xmas tree box, from wilkos.
In the UK, for myself, it's hard to find clear plastic boxes, that are high up sides.
It's just one hybrid dwarf hammy.
I might move her across then.

Re: Bin cage size?
You should get a SALMA 130L from Ikea. I also had trouble finding a suitable box and this on has 660sq inches of floor space so is more than enough.

Re: Bin cage size?
Ah, its the same bin just rebranded for Wilko, I have the exact same ones!
I dont know why I thought you had a Syrian lol but it will be fine for a Russian Dwarf, one of my hybrids (Stormy) also prefers her bin to her old cage. I think the bars made her feel exposed and unsafe.

Re: Bin cage size?
She will always behave differently in a play bin, out of her cage, than in it - because she will see it as a play area and will know she still has her cage to go back to - her home. If you moved her to a bin she'd be wanting to escape.
I think it's too narrow for a cage. She will run on her wheel more at night in her cage - they settle into that and don't use it as much at other times. But in a play area they play.
I think if you wanted a bin cage for a dwarf hamster, you'd want something the size of this Rub bin, which isn't cheap. If you want to upgrade her to something bigger then either that maybe, or the Barney cage?
Go Shopping - Really Useful Boxes - 145 litre Really Useful Box
Both the Barney and Alaska are about the same height and both have fall risks for a dwarf hamster, so if she is climbing bars then it would need setting up to avoid fall risks.
35cm is far too narrow.

Re: Bin cage size?
I've decided to move her across, for a 2 week trial.
I work nights so preparing and between them I'll be awake.
I'll be able to hear her and check there's no excessive wheel running or chewing on toys.
Attached is the bin setup.

Re: Bin cage size?
A cage move is a very big thing for a hamster, and stressful - a big change of environment and habits - so a two week trial isn't really appropriate. In two weeks she'll have had chance to scent mark and adjust so moving her again would be even more stressful.
Hope you moved her old bedding across as well as that will help her settle. Apologies if you already know this, but first couple of days best to leave her alone a bit and not do anything in the cage. And for the next couple of weeks don't move, or clean anything or remove anything, so she gets chance to settle and get over the change. It is a big change from a barred cage to a tank style. If you know where she is peeing and it gets whiffy just spot clean the pee but otherwise best to leave well alone for a couple of weeks so she can adjust.

Re: Bin cage size?
I’d add deeper substrate, mine is filled halfway up with substrate which increases the bin’s width to 40cm and gives her more burrowing space. Burrowing boxes are okay for play cages but theyre not really ideal for the main cage since hamsters like to burrow across the whole width of their cage. If you do keep the burrowing box, it eould be better to move it off the platform incase she decided to jump off the top pf it, its quite a way down to the substrate and she could injure herself on that ladder. Otherwise, it looks like a good setup.

Re: Bin cage size?
Here’s one of Stormy’s old setups in the same bin. I wouldn’t normally have such cluttered setups but she doesn’t like having open space though she’s geting a bit more confident now.
