Hugro Hemp Questions
So I want to buy a wood-based bedding as over the next year I'm gradually moving towards more natural looking cage layouts. I'm currently stuck between Hugro Hemp and Aubiose, Hugro I've definitely heard better experiences on but you get twice the amount for the same price with Aubiose. It's just I've heard that there are some spikey bits and my Syrians are both burrowers so I wouldn't want a sharp piece poking them in the eye.
That leads me on to my next question which is How good is Hugro at holding burrows? My newest hamster has taken quite a liking to it and it's truly fascinating. I see him enter a hole one end and come out at the opposite end of the cage, I wish we could see it!
Anyway, yeah so a bedding that keeps burrows up is essential for me and I'm just asking how efficient Hugro is at this? I've been informed Hugro has a nice natural smell to it and isn't spikey but quite soft. Any confirmation?
Thanks for any reviews, highly appreciated.

Re: Hugro Hemp Questions
I don't know about Aubiose as haven't used it. Most hemp has woody bits but I wouldn't call them sharp or spikey.
What used to be suggested after people found it helped, was mixing two or even three different substrates, to help tunnels hold their shape. eg Hemp and Fitch or Hemp and Kaytee clean and cosy. I think the hemp definitely needs something else mixed with it for holding tunnels as it is an overall soft light thing so they could collapse easily. Fitch on its own seems to hold tunnels quite well - but people used to mix that with something (eg hemp) to help with that.
All I know about Aubiose is that it was very popular a few years ago but people seemed to start going off it due to quality going downhill - it may have improved again though.

Re: Hugro Hemp Questions
That's quite convenient as their current substrate is Kaytee C&C so I can probably mix the clean C&C with more of his familiar scented but not soiled C&C and then some Hugro. Still quite a price stretch for me though! Or I could do different areas with different substrates? What do you think of this? Like having C&C near his nest and his wheel as C&C holds burrows better.

Re: Hugro Hemp Questions
I've never used aubiose but I have used hemp other than Hugro, the Hemparade brand & there was a big difference, the hemparade did have sharp bits in it but I never found that with the Hugro hemp, I think it's probably the safest brand if you do want to go with hemp.
I've used it alone & with fitch & it was fine for burrows either way.
