Default Ikea detolf

I really want to switch my cage for the ikea detolf ive seen mixed reviews on them and apparently it doesnt meet size requirements any more? Any opinions on it or does anyone here use that as a cage?

I’d say it’s a pretty good size & is best suited to dwarf hams. For one hamster, not when it’s been split in 2 to house two of them as that would be too small.

So is an ikea detolf too small for a syrian?

Haha, I've been researching this cage since the start of the year and ended up going with a different one. The Eco-Green Habitat is now back in Zooplus if you're interested. ZooPlus has many great cages like the Kerry terrarium, Alexander, Barney, Alaska etc. But these wouldn't provide as much space as the Detolf apart from the Eco Green Habitat. These are different pros and cons of the Detolf.

Pros:
- Good view with glass front
- Much cheaper than commercial cages
- Provides nearly 1000 sq inches of floor space
- Looks modern
- Great for dwarf hamsters.

Cons:
- The bottom piece of glass needs supporting (because the glass is made to support lightweight things in a cabinet not bedding in a hamster cage) with either books if it's on the floor or two Expedit units which is what lots of people use. An aquarium sealant will also be needed for the side edges.
- A DIY lid will be required.
- The height isn't great so if it's for a Syrian a 12" wheel would need to have little to no substrate underneath in order to fit.
- Can take up much space.

Of course, you'll need to do more research to make sure this cage is right for your lifestyle and if you're confused about anything I mentioned.

Hope this helps

BIE gave good points

Just re read the bit about it not meeting requirements sorry. Don’t think there’s a country where it doesn’t meet reqs - German standards are highest and it’s considered fine there too.
So the detolf is a decent size for a Syrian. Main issue is the height which is why I said more suited to dwarfs. Another potential issue is the narrower width but I don’t think it’s a problem really as it’s still bigger than most cages you can buy.

The detolf is a great size for any hamster. I do remember someone somewhere saying it should be 50cm deep but it more than makes up for that in length and gives a lot of scope for enrichment and interesting set ups. Lots of people have detolfs for both Syrian and dwarf hamsters. The wheel height is a slight issue but there are 11" wheels that will fit. It just means you need a shallow substrate end where the wheel is and deeper substrate elsewhere.

the detolf works well for my oldest Syrian, but even he can get out of it without a lid. make a lid.

The Detolf is suitable for all hamsters but the low height and narrow width do make it better suited for Dwarf hamsters

On the other hand there are no fall risks as there are with some taller cages, which is good The internal height is about the same as the Hamster Heaven.
