Default Is this vivarium ok?

I found this repti-life aquarium on Amazon and it's 48 by 24 by 24 inches. Allowing around 1152 sq inches of floor space. However, it is made of wood, has a very short substrate border and the ventilation discs at the back look too small?

What are your thoughts?

Yes those vivs are meant to keep a more humid environment which is the opposite of what you’d want for a hamster, that would only work if you made much bigger vents (at least a fully meshed top or side panels) and some alteration for a higher substrate border. Making a meshed lid for a normal glass tank would be an easier DIY job than making that suitable for a hamster.

Thanks, mangoandmimi I was sceptical and needed confirmation. It's a shame it isn't suitable because it would've provided a lot of floor space. Oh well.

I can see you looking at all the good sized tanks and vivariums. I did that too and ended up finding a cage better Is there some particular reason you want a tank style cage?

Incidentally the Alaska cage is only £31.99 at the moment. Although I'd get the Barney, Alexander or Savic Plaza.

Serendipity7000,

Yes, I have been looking for tank style cages over a bar one for a couple of reasons:

1) I personally prefer the look of them.
2) I have the money and space for a big cage and tanks were generally bigger than bar cages.
3) I have a very small and very cheeky cat that used to stick their paws through the bars. This problem was fixed when I got a DIY cage from a friend that was tank style.
4) I've always had a fear of them as I've dealt with bar chewing in the past and I know that's only for a couple of nights before you should upgrade the cage but I hate the noise! Also, I see what if the hamster I get requires a large cage it's just I feel there are ways I can spot small cage stress in a tank style much quieter as I can see fast pacing and things like that.

I'm sorry I think it's clear that you have a passion for the Savic Plaza. Please tell me if you think I'm making a mistake. I may be able to afford the Living World Eco Green Large Habitat, what do you think of this?

Are there any other tank style cages/terrariums/vivariums that are good that you are aware of?

Thanks again.

Hi. Sorry I forgot you mentioned before and the cat and those are all good reasons Yes I guess I have a passion for cages ha ha. So if you really want a tank then the detolf or jungle pets ones are good. Personally I'd get the detolf. Loads of people have them/had them with no issues at all. The wheel issue can be got round. Vivariums/terrariums don't really go bigger than 90cm or 100cm. 4 foot is good. I am wondering if the Eco Habitat has been discontinued.

Actually there is also Custom Aquaria - if they are still in business - it seemed to be just the one man. They will make you a tank any size you want, with a lid and also with front opening doors if you want. I had a quote from them for quite a large tank with front opening doors and it was about £125 I think.

They used to be hard to get hold of and say phone is best as they don't seem to check emails.

Zooplus sent an email out saying eco habitat is now unavailable (sounded pretty permanent!) but now they’ve put it due back in stock in a few days, but they’ve done that a lot over the last few months.
The jungle pets one has quite a narrow width, with a 120cm tank you’d rather it was 50 or 60cm both deep and high. Then ones that size are nearing £200 and suddenly the detolf looks like a great choice again
Wooden hamster homes do a 120x60cm cage (plexiglass front) which is about £180 delivered, and there is a risk of hamsters chewing their way out. But it’s a possible option.

Thank you both. Living world cages was always a last resort anyway as they stand out. I'm looking into the place Serendipity mentioned and if I can't do that I'll go back to my original plans of the Detolf.

EDIT: Unfortunately, I don't think the custom aquaria place is still in business, whenever I try to click something like prices it says not available saying that the website is either temporarily or permanently down

I still have a fear of the Detolf breaking since the middle glass will be holding bedding and toys but not supported by anything since it's just connected to the wooden ends and doesn't have anything underneath it.

I am considering emailing JunglePets for a bigger tank but just to get an estimate at how much that would cost.
Thanks, guys!
