Default Housing for a syrian?

Hi,
We don't currently own a hamster but are doing research into what is needed. I have found a cage that was for sale on a local selling site-they didn't know what the make/name of the cage is but after googling it looks similar to a zoozone, I've measured it and it's 100cm long and 50cm wide and from my measuring could fit a 12 inch wheel in there. We would have to put extra mesh over the top but that shouldn't be too much of a problem hopefully.
I have messaged the rescue we are hoping to be able to adopt from, to check if it would be suitable but just wanted some opinions from all you experienced people too!
I'm still totally confused re choosing bedding/substrate to use and how much I'd need to properly fill this kind of cage too so any advice on that would be amazing too
