Default Hamster Homes Cages

Hi Guys,

I'm looking at upgrading my Syrian to a hamster homes hand made Wooden cage and wondered if anyone actually has one.

If so what size and what do you think of it?

thanks

I don't have one but think they are lovely. I prefer the one with perspex in the front rather than mesh. It's one of the few 120cm cages available! Although the 90cm is a good size too. I would probably get the 120cm if I had the space. I believe the base is already painted with waterproofing paint but you might want to paint the inside wood with plasticote so it's wipe clean and doesn't get smelly.

I thought seriously about getting one of these, but I prefer to use barred cages.

Hi Oreo13, I recently made a handmade cage for my little Syrian girl Maisie, it's 100cm x 75cm with a plexiglass front, lined with adhesive vinyl, and sealed with silicone aquarium sealant. It's so much better for my girl because she was a dreadful bar chewer, and also loves a good amount of floor space. I made mine from scratch and designed my own bespoke plans, but I know there's a few options like Ikea double-billy cage or the detolf, there are plenty of YouTube tutorials on those if making you're not so keen on too much sawing! x

Thanks Guys,

I was looking at the hamster homes because i like the look but don't really want to have to build it myself, even though i know i could.

Luna already has a 100x50 bared cage so i was looking at the 120x60. Do you think the 150 would be too big?

thanks

120x60 is a decent size. But 150 or even 180cm would be better for a Syrian. Definitely not too small, they’re both significantly better sizes. The only thing is the cage is already quite low and Syrians will need at least 8-10 inches of bedding at least up one end of the cage. So with a lower cage that’s more achievable in something 150cm long. But if you’re looking at a meshed option that’s not exactly possible unless you modify it - so the plexiglass would definitely be a better option. Not sure if they can customise it for you. If not and you can’t modify it yourself, best stick with the 120cm plexiglass. I’ve seen some lovely Syrian setups with those.
