Re: Is the cage set up ok?
That looks really nice.
It would probably be worth moving the cage back upstairs to see if it makes a difference, I've never kept hams in the same room as other animals so have no idea if it normally bothers them or not but you've tried just about everything you can with him where he is now so hopefully he'll be happier in the other room.
Try not to feel bad about it, it is hard when you can't seem to make them feel happy & comfortable around you but you're really doing all you can for him.

Thanks Cypher - will move him upstairs later & give him this week to settle then start the taming business again - I will need to replace his house next as he has decided that's where his toilet is and it's wooden - will plastikote the next one and hopefully it will last longer!

Re: Is the cage set up ok?
Fingers crossed it goes well!
I think it's normal for them to pee in the house when they're nervous about coming out so Plastikote will be a real help!

Re: Is the cage set up ok?
Yes do try moving the cage. When my hamster is on holiday at my parents' she used to be on the landing against the banister and for some reason she would refuse to come out until about 4am so was basically a no show. I was seriously worried and thought she was ill or something, she was completely different to usual. We decided to move her into a really quiet bedroom against a wall and she was back out by 10 again and seemed much more confident. Maybe she could smell the dogs from the other area and I guess it was a bit noisier. Either way sometimes they just don't seem to like certain spots and it's not always clear why, so maybe moving him back up will help. Really wouldn't have thought gerbils being in the same room would've had a big impact though, guess some animals are just more affected by the presence of others. Hoping he gains confidence soon!

Yes it looks great ,but he probably is still nervous, because its a new location and that its noisier than it was upstairs. My hamster usually looks nervous when there is loud noises outside my room, so that could very much be the case.

Re: Is the cage set up ok?
Hopefully moving him back upstairs will help! You could also try hanging a few natural grass hammocks as well.
