Behaviour linked to cage?
Will be taking in another hamster, this time a winter white, at the start of next week. His(her? Not really sure what its gender is) old cage is a small, I think the dimensions are around 50 by 30 cm. I put a picture beneath, maybe some people know what this cage is called?
He's a bit quirky, from what I hear.
-Very tiny. But he turned 1 year old yesterday.
-Lightining quick
-Very messy, pee and poos everywhere in cage
This means his current owner doesn't give him wooden things and cleans his house and wheel weekly.
-Loves to dig, bulldozes his bedding to one half of cage.
-does react to voice, also doesn't bite.
-Can't be handled, very hyper and climbs on and over all his toys
He has a medium sizes silent spinner.
Is this behaviour linked to his cage size?
Also needing name suggestions, he's called a very common and boring name, that translates in to "Tiny face" or "Tiny snout"

Re: Behaviour linked to cage?
Not sure what the cage is called but I have seen that or very similar & it is pretty tiny.
His behaviour sounds fairly normal to me, if he doesn't have a sand bath or a proper house it's not surprising he doesn't have a pee spot & tends to do it all over the cage unless he's peeing a lot & drinking a lot then you might need to consider diabetes (I'm guessing he is probably a hybrid rather than WW?).
What cage do you plan to put him in? If he's a year already & has spent his whole life in that cage then I wouldn't go too big at least to begin with.
I'd get to know him before you think about names.

Re: Behaviour linked to cage?
Criceti 15, with a good amount of substrate and tubes. I want to give him a sandbath and later a better and bigger house.
His color is golden red eye, I think? Dutch term I do know, "Geel wildkleur roodoog." So a hybrid is possible?
He never had a sand bath, but had a fairly tiny plastic house that comes standard with alot of Ferplast cages. Has always been housed tiny.
I am curious to see if he will change behaviour once properly settled Will be leaving him alone for most of the first week and just observe him.

Re: Behaviour linked to cage?
It's the Savic Peggy 50cm x 36cm x 28cm- see link below. It is a bit small but some people find dwarf hamsters are ok in smaller cages as a starter cage. However he is a year old and sounds very active. If you have a bigger cage and can give him more enrichment I'm sure he'd appreciate it but it would need setting up so as lots of hidey places and overhead cover - so he doesn't feel too exposed. And they do take 2 weeks to adjust to a bigger/different cage usually.
He does sound like it might be a need for more activity and space/stress - weekly cleanouts won't have helped.

The Criceti 15 sounds like an excellent option - not too big not too small.

Re: Behaviour linked to cage?
My last hamster was in a tiny cage before I got him, with a 4 inch wheel (he was an adult Syrian), he was nippy, messy, very nervous and not active at all.
I moved him into the Alaska with a 12 inch wheel, he was so active, very friendly always met you at the bars in the morning when I got up and evening when he got up. Was no longer skittish and nervous. I didn't even have to out much work into taming him, just seeing him frequently and giving him more space to be a hamster worked

Glad he got a better life with you!
Tiny man is here, and he's tiny. Front half of the body looks fine, but his back half seems a bit tiny.
Stil...there's a chance the former owner comes and picks him up, it was very hard for her. In that case I've advocated for a Kios cage and not the Peggy one he had before.
