Is my cage good enough? pics included
So it's a pretty plain 20 gallon tank, that my 2 year old syrian hamster, Mr. Whiskers lives in, he has a plastic toy, loofas, a house, a wheel, a two puzzle playground box unit, food water and a litter box. He has a water bowl (the thing shaped like a lamp in the pics) instead of a water bottle for two reasons; first, he was always chewing really loudly on the bottle (which was not clogged, and he was drinking easily from) he even had chews in his cage. And second, it's hard to find bottle that fit in his cage, because even the ones for aquarium with hooks, don't fit over a ledge that's under the mesh top. He's a pretty big hamster, and the bowl does not tip over, and I change the water twice a day, but still- is it okay to have the water in a bowl?
Another thing is, that I was looking for a plastic platform or shelf, triangle shaped with legs that support itself to go in the front corner of the tank that has nothing in it, Maybe it could have a tube coming down or something, where could I find one of these? or how could I make one? I think it would make more space, and make it more interesting for mr. Whiskers.

I don't think you can put a bowl of water in a hamster cage as I think there's a good chance Mr Whiskers may drown in it. You'll also need to make sure he has something to chew on otherwise he won't be able to wear down his teeth. As a rodent Mr Whiskers teeth are constantly growing and it can lead to some very serious health problems if he can't gnaw on something. Maybe you could try some of the wooden treats/toys available? My hamster likes to chew on old toilet roll tubes, nuts that are still in their shells as well as small pieces of hazel wood. Although she does still have a nibble on her bars.

You should make a ledge yourself for Mr Whiskers. Just use a normal cheap plastic box and turn it upside down. You can add a piece of wood as a ramp or buy a cheap rodent ladder and lean that up against it.
http://www.industrysearch.com.au/pro...mages/food.jpg - a little box like this would do.

oh, no he has lots of chews, I give him a hamster nibble bar every day, and as for the water he is too big to fit his head in the bowl let alone drown in it. my concern was more about the water getting contaminated. but thanks for the suggestion, I'l try giving him nets in shells sometime

If he has lots of chew toys then I think the new cage is fine. It looks as though Mr Whiskers has lots of things to keep him occupied in there. I'm not sure what you could do about the water bottle....maybe fashion something using suckers and some wire?

Re: Is my cage good enough? pics included
I've tried several different types of cages, and aquariums are, IMO, the best containers for Hamsters. They're versatile, roomy, easy to keep clean, and offer good viewing.
If you can find them, I always liked these bin-type cages too - Amazon.com: CritterTrail Home Outlook: Kitchen & Dining - I had two of these and one Ovo setup, but am moving towards 10 gallon aquariums for all my dwarf hamsters. They have been working out great.
A lot of people like normal bar-type cages (because they have good ventilation), but my hamsters chew on the bars and this always bothers me. I feel like it is ruining their teeth or something.

I was at P@H today and noticed they had a pack of suckers and some additional bits to stick a regular water bottle to the side of a tank. That's if you're still looking for a solution.
