Default keeping hamsters in the same room

I currently have a male russian hamster Snowball and I am thinking of getting another female Syrian hamster that I have seen on gumtree. The only trouble is they would have to stay in the same room with only a few inches between their cages. My last hamster , a female Syrian did not take to having snowball next to her and was stressed by him so that I had to take Snowball to live at my parents house. I don't want to do this again. Snowball wasn't at all bothered by Hammy. So do you think another female Syrian hamster will be ok with her cage right next to Snowball? It is a big cage and I'd like to give this hamster a good home.

Some hamsters seem to be more bothered by being next to another hamster than others but I have found that hamsters that have been used to living with others are more adaptable to having new neighbours.

I currently have seven Chinese and one Robo in my hamster room (plus another Chinese in quarantine in another room) and because they've never known any different they are fine with living near to other hamsters. They can act a bit unusual for a few days if one dies or I bring in a new hamster as the scents in the room changes. They soon settle down again though once they've had a chance to get used to things.

I think a lot depends on the hamster tbh, I have three at the moment & have had four in my living room & they don't really take any notice of each other but there is at least a few feet between each cage, a few inches may just be too close for comfort for some hams, is there any way you can rearrange things so they a bit further apart?
