Flying Saucer:)
Is it okay to just have a 12 inch flying saucer in a detolf cage?Do i have to have a traditional wheel? She has had a traditional wheel all her life but they keep breaking. She seems to really enjoy her new flying saucer!I would really appreciate some advice She has just moved into her detolf cage and she loves all the space!
Thanks,
Em and Hope xx

Re: Flying Saucer:)
A flying saucer wheel is a perfectly acceptable wheel and if it works for Hope, then it's fine. I'd only recommend the traditional wheel if she appears to be having difficulty with it or is running less than she normally would.
Glad to hear she likes the detolf

Re: Flying Saucer:)
Some hams do really enjoy the flying saucers but it does make them run in a position that isn't ideal so they're best used just for occasional use in a playpen or something like that, they also take up a lot more room in the cage than an upright wheel & you can make better use of the space you have with an upright one.
Which wheels have you tried? The best really well made, silent wheel which is highly unlikely to break is the silent runner (not silent spinner!).

Thanks for the advice.Have you got a silent runner and where did you get it from. The only one I"ve seen is £38(UK).Perhaps too expensive for me, but I do agree with you that they seem to run strangely on the saucers I might put in another Trixie wheel and see which one my hamster uses most. There is lots of room fortunately in my cage, for the saucer.Have you any other suggestions for reliable brands of traditional wheels that are 11 or 12 inches(plastic). Thanks.🙂x

Re: Flying Saucer:)
Silent runners are expensive (I know, I have four ) I got mine from t his site, a bit cheaper but still not cheap!
A cheaper option but still a good & very quiet wheel is this wooden one from Zooplus I would advise painting wooden wheels with plastikote water based enamel before use though to protect them from pee!

Re: Flying Saucer:)
I would personally recommend having both the flying saucer and a traditional wheel in the cage. As like cypher says they can run in a position which isn't best therefore provide her with both wheel so she can choose which she prefers to use. She might also enjoy running back and forth between the 2 wheels like my girl does with her two upright wheels.
Good upright and silent wheels that I have and use for my girl are plastic Trixie wheel, wooden Trixie wheel, DIY bucket wheel as well as a Silent Runner. These all work really well and are all silent/fairly silent.
