Question Barney or Alaska Cage?, Opinions Please

Hi Everyone?

I am currently cage hunting and I am torn between the Alaska and Barney, I am not keen on the Alexander cage just out of preference I want to be about to put a 12 inch wheel in without struggling for space and I prefer to add my own shelf’s etc.

Does anyone already own these cages and have opinions?, it would be much appreciated.

Many Thanks

The barney is bigger than the alaska, it might not seem by much but it will make quite a difference to how much you can get into the cage, the biggest advantage of the alaska in my opinion is the large front opening door, I really don't like pokey doors!
If you want to put your own shelves & other accessories in then what comes with the cage doesn't matter too much.

Thank you so much for the advice I must admit I like a good size door opening, also i don’t think I am so keen on the wooden accessories that come with the Barney and I would much rarther build up the cage myself.

I know some people have complained about the quality of the Alaska I have have had a look at the reviews on Zooplus and they seem really good.

The alaska isn't the sturdiest of cages it's true but it's perfectly adequate, the bars come flat & have hooks that join the sides together, some people have found the hooks don't hold when you lift the top of but I just tightened them with pliers & it was no problem at all.

I was sure I had posted on this thread! Maybe I forgot to press the button lol. Either cage would be good. I have the Barney for our Syrian. I also wasn't keen on the idea of wood in a cage initially, but I did what most people do on here and painted them with plastikote (which is safe and comes in clear or different colours . The house in the Barney is a good size for a syrian. But if you like the Alaska, that's good too.

I don't have a problem with the doors on the Barney - you can have a hand through the top and the front at the same time and our Syrian just comes to one of the front doors to come out (I have a log in front of it to climb up).

Having said that, it is really nice having a large front opening door and a flat roof with no doors - so you can use the roof as well - for attaching things to or tying things to.

Have you seen the Savic Hamster Plaza?! It costs a bit more but it is a 100cm cage (not quite as bulky as the Barney as less deep) and also has a front opening door. If you're planning on setting it up yourself it's a good start - maybe needs another shelf etc.

It also folds down flat like the Alaska, for storage or if you wanted to take it with you somewhere. Savic cages tend to be made a bit better than Skyline ones too, generally, with tougher plastic on the bases.

That would be my ideal cage, although as I already have a Barney I can't justify getting one really!

It's about the same height as the Alexander cage, so slightly taller than the Alaska and Barney, but with plenty of substrate in it should be fine.

The only other real differences with the cages is - the Barney has 7mm bar spacing, so could be used in future for dwarf hammies as well, if set up carefully. Whereas the Alaska and Hamster Plaza have 1cm ish bar spacing.

I'd definetely recommend the Alaska Hamster Cage, I haven't owned a Barney Hamster Cage yet, but the Alaska Hamster Cage is pretty good for Winter Whites and Syrians, maybe not for Roborovskis.

I haven't had an Alaska cage, so I can only speak about the Barney. I have it for my Syrian hamster and he seems to love it. He never displays any stress behaviours, such as bar chewing or monkey-barring and seems very content in his home. The small front doors aren't the best (my arms are quite thick, so it can be a bit awkward, but the top door compensates for it (can still interact with my hammy, if I lay my arm flat, so it doesn't seem threatening). Also, I like the bars of the cage, they seem quite sturdy (and them being 7mm apart is suitable, if I would ever want to get a dwarf hamster in the future). The Barney also has a nice deep plastic tray, which allows me to put in lots of substrate, so my hamster can burrow.
