Syrian hamster cages
I'm thinking about upgrading Dudley on a budget but I want to get him at least 100X50X30
I'm thinking about the Barney, the Alexander (hopefully it will go back on offer soon) or a bin cage, but I can't find anything that looks suitable here in the U.K. Could anyone help me?

Re: Syrian hamster cages
I'm thinking around £60 as a maximum. Ideally, more like £40

Re: Syrian hamster cages
The Barney and Alexander are both very good cages. The Alexander has the advantage of coming with lots of platforms. But, you could make or buy additional platforms for the Barney, depending on how much you can afford to spend. The Alaska would be well within your budget, though it's 84cm X 48.5cm so a little smaller than you are looking for.

The Barney is (in my opinion) rubbish. My Syrian is in the process of chewing her way out of it.
Personally I think tank cages are the best.

It's unfortunate when you get a chewer! Your little un sounds like she has quite a character luckily though, chewers are very uncommon. 99% of hamsters will not try to chew their way out of their cage. And a hamster who will try this in the Barney, is just as likely to try it in the Alexander or other cage of the same sort so it's not really the Barney's fault in particular. This kind of behaviour does mean that that particular hamster is more suited to tanks, as you have found!
If Dudley is a chewer, you will know already as he will have started chewing his way out of his current cage. If he has done so, I agree that you should look for a tank. If he has not, you'll do fine with the Barney or other similar cage.

Re: Syrian hamster cages
You could always try to find a fish tank on Gumtree and construct a lid. I'm in the process of looking for one myself.

Completely agree! But what I've found is the plastic base is rather flimsy in the Barney.

Don't own it myself so can't comment, but again this should only be a problem if the hamster in question is a chewer. I know most hamsters in the Barney aren't so determined to chew out as your little darling, bless her

Re: Syrian hamster cages
I have a horrible chewer (chewed through plexiglass!) but I'd still recommend the Barney if you can get hold of it. Many hamsters will chew, but this can be fixed with a large enough cage along with plenty of stimulation and deep bedding. I'd definitely recommend it
