I had the Savic Mickey 2XL for a while - which is identical to the hamster heaven other than it has smaller bar spacing and doesn't come with the shelves and tubes - it's a plain cage (it did come with a wire grid shelf which I removed as it's not safe for hamsters). I ended up using a large house with a flat roof as a platform So it did two things - made a nice house for nesting and also a bit of a shelf. I also had a small shelf in one corner. They do seem to like to sit underneath a shelf sometimes. It was a little lava ledge I had in the corner, next to his house roof, so he could use it to climb on, and then into his sputnik from there, so it was like a step. That was for a syrian but a similar idea could be used for a dwarf hamster. Most houses aren't that tall so don't make much of a shelf. You could maybe leave one of the shelves in, rather than buy a new one, but frankly the one I bought (which is the solid shelf from the Hamster Heaven) I ended up taking out again as it was a total pain! It has a hump in the middle and a food pot in one corner. Our hammy decided the food pot was a toilet as it was in a corner and kept missing it so pee used to run down the shelf (the hump gave it a good slope to run down). Also the little houses on the shelves are a bit small for nesting and are solid underneath so sweat and get smelly and need cleaning out too often (hammies don't like their nests being removed). And then the ladder broke. So I gave up on it. I did use one of the little houses from the shelf in the pet carrier and as a toy in a playpen.

This is what the HH would look like (similar to Fluffagrams photo) set up like that

I also added a vine branch to the front left corner. They are nice for climbing up and hiding under, and it gave access to the other sputnik. I eventually tied a cardboard boredom breaker tube (tough cardboard) to the roof between the big sputnik and the house roof so it gave a kind of roof run and two ways to get into the sputnik. So another great thing about that cage is, not only does it have a huge front opening door (good for taming and interaction and getting things in and out of the cage) but it means it doesn't have a door in the roof so you can tie all kinds of things to the roof and add a roof run level sort of.

Thanks so much to everyone for the reviews. The pictures were especially helpful.
I went to the pet shop to see it today and it looked amazing but was a whole €40 euro more expensive than on Zooplus. So I've ordered it there and eagerly await it getting here

Again thanks all x

Hey Serendipity - Where can I find the large house pictured here? Does the roof lift off?
Your cage setup is making me consider removing the large green platform in my HH.
When Lil is fully grown, I think she will have outgrown the hideaways provided.
In fact, she's already taken to building a nest in her big bendy tube.
Think I should treat her to a large house like the one you have
Thanks

It's a guinea pig house in the link below. It was a great house, but no the roof doesn't lift off, so I changed it for a different one (in the photo), which does have a lift off roof! That one is actually a Ferplast Sin Rabbit house - way too small for a rabbit though. Both of them have quite large doors so I put a bendy bridge over it to make it dark.

This is the one in the photo above (no lift off roof)

And the Ferplast Sin in the cage

There is also a Guinea pig sized Ferplast Sin. Again way too small for a guinea pig but not a bad size for a hamster. It's smaller than the first guinea pig house though.

It's a good size for a hamster though. I went with the bigger rabbit one because it was big enough to fit a litter tray inside after our hammy moved his toilet corner inside his house.

I think your hammy will like that The rabbit sized one did take up quite a bit of space in the cage.

I just put Lil's new ferplast house in her cage.
Funniest thing is since removing the green savic level and adding the house, she has been burrowing for the past hour which (to my knowledge) she has never done before!
I haven't added more substrate but perhaps because there is now more open floor space..

Here she is when she briefly popped above ground
