Upgrading cage
So, having mulled it over for a few days, my mum has agreed that I can try to return Dudley's large Duna Fun to PaH and replace it, but I have a few questions.
1. I'm mostly looking at the ZooZone 2 and the Alaska. My main concern is the lid/door because I like having plenty of access to the inside of the cage if that makes sense. I'm not so keen on the small-ish doors on the Alexander. Does anyone have any suggestions?
2. Would either cage accommodate his current bottle, which is the Living World Eco+ water bottle? I'm rather attached
3. This part is really silly, but does anyone have any advice on what to say when I call up PaH to see if they'll accept the return? My mum says that I need to do this myself but I'm painfully shy and quite socially awkward (this coming from a 16 year-old).
Sorry to be such a pest.

Re: Upgrading cage
I personally can't live without large front doors I've only tried one cage without & hated it so I'd recommend the Alaska. It does have the top door too but you don't really need it as you can access the whole cage through the front door.
The Alaska bar spacing is quite narrow & I found putting a bottle spout through bent the bars a bit so I used a bottle stand before I switched to using bowls, I think you can get one for the bottle you use but I'm not entirely sure.
I'll leave 3 to someone else as I'm pretty hopeless at doing that sort of thing too, sorry!

Re: Upgrading cage
I empathise with the social awkwardness. I'm 19 and also painfully shy, however I have recently become much more pushy when it comes to dealing with messy situations in which you have to press to get what you want. The key thing to remember is that you are the customer and they are at fault. Also, try not to care what they think of you.
I would explain that the cage simply is not suitable. You were advised (falsely) by a P@H member of staff that it was suitable, and therefore feel that the responsibility for the mistake in you buying it lies with P@H. They misled you and, as such, they should refund you.
I had the Alaska, because it has a lovely big front opening door. The only problem, is that it is quite flimsy and not made of very high quality materials. If you want to lift the top off, all the panels often come apart, the clips attaching it to the base pop off and the top section must be rebuilt.
I too liked cages such as the Alexander, but their tiny doors were enough of an issue for me that I did not buy one. I found my near perfect cage in the Savic Hamste Plaza. It is more expensive than the Alexander or Alaska, but it has a big front opening door and us a very high quality cage.
You can see my review of it here:

Re: Upgrading cage
The alaska is a bit flimsy but it's not that bad & lasted me well while I used it, the trick is to use a pair of pliers to tighten up the hooks after putting it together so the sides stay firmly together.

Re: Upgrading cage
I'm currently looking at this one:
https://www.jollyes.co.uk/zoo-zone-l...l-habitat.html
I would obviously need another way to attach the bottle. It's a slightly odd shape so I don't know how I'd do that... It's that or come to terms with the small doors on cages because some people have said that the Alaska is a little flimsy and since I'd upgrading I'd like to go up to 100cm at least
Thanks for your advice on calling up PaH, April

Re: Upgrading cage
Could you email them first? It's always easier to do these things in writing, as you have time to think how to say it. Put the points that AprilPearl said - about bad advice in shop, etc. AND stress that you want to swop it, not just return it.
Also, it gives THEM time to think about it. Their default answer might be "No" when put on the spot with a phone call. But if they have time to think, then there might be no problem.
But if you email them, only give them a day or so to answer, then email again, and THEN call. By that time you'll be so angry at not having had an answer, it'll be easier for you.

Re: Upgrading cage
Thanks Felicity. The issue is that Pets at Home don't actually stock a cage larger than his current one so it would have to be a refund rather than an exchange. The email is a good idea though.

Re: Upgrading cage
I think a lot of people have that cage and their hamsters are perfectly happy in it a problem for me would be lack of places to attach good shelves, but that's by no means a necessity. Also, the door being on the roof might make access to the cage difficult, despite it being a large door.

Re: Upgrading cage
Pets At Home do stock the Hamster Heaven which is a big enough size and has a huge front door. You may need to remove the penthouse though. It is a good sturdy cage though.

Re: Upgrading cage
Pets At home also have the Slavic Ruffy (rat) cage. It's too small for rats, but a nice size for a hamster. They may be more willing to do a part exchange/money off the new cage rather than a refund as they will still be making money.
