Default Cage Help

I have a really tall bin cage (48cm) . Can I leave the bin cage open ( without the lid) or would my hamster escape?
Btw I'm getting a Syrian male

I wouldn't leave it uncovered. I had a 45 cm high aquarium tank and my ham managed to scape several times. They could be real houdinis, and they can block their wheel, pile the substrate, or just climb the water bottle to scape (among other antics, they always surprise you, really)

If there were no tall toys that your ham could climb to get out it would probably be fine. Though be sure you have no cats or dogs in the same room as your hamster because they could reach the hamster quite easily. Although it would probably be safer to have a lid, as Hamsterita mentioned above they are quite the escape artists and catching an escaped hamster can be difficult!

I personally wouldn't recommend leaving it open. I made that mistake with my first hamster and I lost her a good seven times! Hamsters are master escape artists and can manage to find their way out of even the most secure of cages so an uncovered one is just an invitation. You definitely don't want an escaped hamster, and you wouldn't believe how many members on here come seeking for advice on escapee hamsters, even more unfortunate is the number of them who actually find their hamsters. Another issue that will arise is the depth of the bedding. Syrian hamsters should have an absolute bare minimum of 8-10 inches (20-25cm) of bedding, but 12 inches (30cm) or more is really best. Having this much bedding and a wheel+other items will bring it right up to the top and your hamster could easily just crawl right out. However, creating a lid is cheap and easy! All you need is 1/4-1/2 inch hardware cloth and maybe wood (depending upon how high-tech you want to get). Good luck and make sure to share pics of your hamster when you welcome him home

Leaving anything open isn't worth the risk If you have a proper upright wheel(which you absolutely do need)then that is an easy enough escape route if a hamster gets the chance.Hamsters also climb out by climbing onto water bottles, and no matter how high you position something they can always pile substrate and other things underneath in order to gain access.

Even if you don't have other animals in your house, there are many other risks including toxic household substances.Hamsters will not hesitate to at least nibble on most things, even if it may kill them

Making a lid only requires mesh as Drago mentioned and a wood burning knife(or another similar tool).Making a lid with wood is unreliable at best since it won't be as secure,so I'd just avoid doing that(plus it costs more to get tools to put a wood lid together,if that matters to you!).

You'll need a lid And the advantage of having such a tall bin cage is you can half fill it with substrate, so your hammy can dig tunnels - it's about one of the best things you can give them - loads of substrate - 20cm deep or more (the Germans say 30cm). Which in itself will reduce the height. But even without deep substrate, as the others say, a hamster will escape - they are great escape artists.

I would get a lid. It gives you the ability to add more substrate, like Serendipity toys, but it also gives you the option of using hanging toys. When the weather it warmer, sometimes I'll bring the hamster cage outside for a little bit (supervised!) which would be extremely dangerous if there were no lid.
