Default Bin cage dilemma

Can I , instead of using mesh , just drill holes on the lid of the bin ?
Will that provide enough ventilation ?

I forgot but I have a really tall bin so I was also thinking of drilling one line of holes on the sides of the bin. Will that be okay ?
My bin is 48cm tall.

Drilling holes does not give adequate ventilation.Nothing will compare to mesh,as you'll always have more solid surface than open places for ventilation with any other method(wire shelving shouldn't be used as it cannot be verified safe).

You have to use mesh because it is the only thing that allows for adequate ventilation. Drilling holes will not provide nearly enough air flow and will potentially allow the cage to become far too hot internally, which won't end well. Most DIY stores will sell mesh. I have personally bought mesh from B and Q so they definitely sell it.
