Sometimes craft wood is safe- Popsicle sticks are made of white birch and that's safe. However, unless you know for sure what it is, I'd avoid it if you can. You could always call the number that's (typically) on the packaging and ask what species it is

You could check in the shop you bought the wood from. Then if it is safe use it.

I looked on hobby lobby's website and the product I purchased was labeled as "birch wood canvas" and all of their other wood products are birch so I'm pretty sure it's ok to use

Question Re: The natural cage theme thread- questions and suggestions

So I've run into a teeny problem- the wood platform I purchased is 18x14 and the side of the cage I wanted to have it on is 18". I tried fitting the wood platform into the cage but it's just slightly too big :/ It won't fit in strait. I'm not sure how much I should take off the side of the platform to make it short enough to fit in the cage whilst it still fitting without any gaps.

External aquarium dimensions aren't going to be identical to the internal dimensions, due to the glass thickness.I'd just take a cm or two off at a time if you can access even a basic hand saw,and adjust accordingly.

Hand saws could certainly be used, but it is incredibly difficult to get measurements even or exact with them tbh. A table saw would be much easier, and more accurate if you can find one. If you're not familiar with how tablesaws work, then you should have someone more experienced complete the cut as they can be dangerous if not used properly. However, they're super accurate and much better than a plain hand saw IMO (though then again, I'm a woodworker so I am quite biased)

Thanks for the advice you two!

Drago-
My father is the "tool master" as we call him- he told me he has some different saws and he said a jigsaw would probably be best for the job I want done. I myself however would probably chop my fingers off if I tried to use a saw :whoops: :P He may have a table saw. I can ask him.

A jig saw would work just fine too! There's several bits of equipment you could use so whatever works best for you Please share the finished product when you can!

Sorry just noticed your question. The brackets I purchased are basswood which I read was safe.
