Also another question-
I see in the cage posts that many of you have soft fabric houses, or hammocks for your hamsters. Do you ever have an issue of them chewing on them? Does it vary by the individual hamster? And where is your favorite place to get these? Thanks a million!!

Personally I wouldn't use fabric items. There's never a guarantee that a hamster won't chew them, therefore they can't be guaranteed as safe. There are however seagrass hammocks and similar hammocks which would be digestible if chewed and are therefore completely safe to use

Currently the only DIY things madam ham has really got in her cage are
- a loo roll tube (that classic!) to chew on
- one of those cardboard coffee cup holders that you get in coffee shops for carrying 2-4 cups, upside down, and sometimes I put treats underneath it so she has to chew through

She did once have a very, very nice, hand-stitched in the UK double hammock from Fuzzbutts. The little madam chewed through it so it had to be removed because it was dangerous. She now has two of these which are arranged in a double hammock style, so the lower half hangs lower than the top Trixie Natural Grass Hammock for Pets at zooplus

There are also lots of good ideas here Hamster toys and accessories from recycled household items thread

Thanks a bunch! I gave him a tp roll, and I'll give him my next drink carrier I'll check out your links. Also- a side note- I'm in the US (I realize some things from other places are still available in the US) so anything available here would be good too!

It isn't a DIY but Petco bendable bridges are and most likely always will be a definite favorite of mine They're large enough for Syrians, reasonably priced(especially compared to other large bendable bridges at $10+ for a single bridge while the Petco ones range from $2-$4 depending on when you get them and if you order them online or buy them in store).

For a bit of a DIY project that is very simple to do daily and can be made in any size you want, strips of toilet paper in a pile with healthy treats or the main diet hidden inside have gone down really well in my experience.

I'd recommend a DIY platform(hamster-safe untreated wood with wooden dowels, use Elmer's glue to attach the dowels and depending on the platform's purpose a popsicle stick edge may be necessary). These can be made to whatever size you want, and are especially good to hold a sand bath or water bowl(highly recommended over bottles in most cases,as hamsters drink a lot better from them and the water will be fresh if you're refilling the bowl often enough).I personally use reptile water dishes as they work perfectly for hamster water bowls if they're shallow enough and not too large, for example Petco carries a $3 bowl that is excellent for this purpose.Just make sure there are no weird holes or places for a hamster to get injured,as with any other item in the cage!

I created a DIY platform for my hamsters wheel. The platform is pretty much a square with one corner cut off. I cut willow sticks into small pieces & glued them around the platform to make kind of a fence.

The only thing I have handmade at the mo is this ikea Knuff platform thingybob. I was (and still might at some point) going to put it on stilts but she currently nests underneath the overhand at the back, so I might leave it as it is. I made the little ramp on the left out of lolipop sticks and filled in the gaps on the bird ladder with smaller sticks.

I am also thinking of making a hut to go over her sandbath out of lolipop sticks to stop her kicking sand everywhere

Thank you all! I'm going to attempt at making a big house out of popsicle sticks, and I think I'll grab some bendable bridges from Petco.
