Sand Baths & Long Hair
I’ve been thinking of getting Mushu a sand bath, but as he has long hair I was wondering whether it might not be such a good idea. Does anyone have a long haired hamster with a sand bath? Will the sand all get stuck in his fur?

Re: Sand Baths & Long Hair
Humphrey loves his sand bath, so I can almost guarantee Mushu will like it, but I'm not sure about the long hair

Re: Sand Baths & Long Hair
Did you buy Humphrey a bath, or did you just put in a tray filled with sand? Not sure how deep a sand bath should be for hamsters and pets at home are only selling one for chinchillas.

Re: Sand Baths & Long Hair
You only need an inch or so of sand.It must be either sterilized play sand or high quality chinchilla sand Larger but shallow cereal bowls and similar things can make a good sand bath.As for the long hair part it'll be fine!

Re: Sand Baths & Long Hair
Thanks Amity. How tall should the sides of the bath/bowl be?

Re: Sand Baths & Long Hair
Just a few inches tall is fine, but for a Syrian you could go with something a bit deeper(just keep the sand low and have a bendy bridge exit and entrance of sorts).

Re: Sand Baths & Long Hair
Amity is right that you don't need much sand. I find they do tend to have one little dig and then use it as a potty!! That's fine by me though. I use a lasagne type dish for my sand anout 9in X 5in.
