Substrate for a long haired ham
Our new hammy who we get in 3 weeks is a long haired and it will be our first time having a LH ham. I'm assuming woodshavings will get caught in their fur (correct me if I'm wrong). What's the best Substrate to use?

Re: Substrate for a long haired ham
Woodshavings would get caught in their fur, plus there are other issues with woodshavings that make them relatively inappropriate compared to much safer substrate choices such as Fitch(recycled paper,no dyes or unsafe additives, and cost effective in bulk!).No matter what fur type, paper is always best,as wood or hemp can cause an allergic reaction(even if you think it isn't common,it happens far more often than anyone would assume)or in some cases they're far too rough and could cause injury especially with horse grade products

Re: Substrate for a long haired ham
Luna has long hair but she is female, so if you are getting a male hamster the fur will be much longer. I use fitch substrate with her, and while she gets a bit on her fluff occasionally, its not tangled or really "stuck" and she can get it off herself. I don't need to pull it off her or anything like that.

Great, thanks for the info. Where can you buy Fitch from?

Don't buy it from Amazon or you'll pay more than necessary Also, the 20kg size is the best value and if you set up a cage with it or replace old substrate you're not going to need to store the full 20kg of substrate anyways so storage is not really an issue if you get creative with ways to store it(must be indoors,as with any substrate).

Re: Substrate for a long haired ham
Many substrates tangle in LH boys' fur. Fitch and Finacard do. If I want to keep a male with a long skirt for showing then I use wooden cat pellets or Back 2 Nature as they tangle much less. If you're not planning to show, then you can always trim a long skirt if you use other substrates and they tangle. This is what I do with older males.
