Default House!

Does anyone else hamster refuse to sleep in any sort of house? I have bought my hammy the typical house, igloos, wooden house and she refuses to sleep in any of them she just pulls all the bedding out and put it in the corner and burrows

That's a perfectly normal behavior. Some hamsters just don't like sleeping in someone else's creation. It might be a bit annoying but you have nothicing to worry about.

I certainly do! My older hamster Duncan refuses to sleep anywhere else except the side of his wheel which is unfortunate because he jams it up constantly with all his nesting material! As Jl says, it's perfectly normal behavior and is nothing to worry over! Every hamster has his or her thing and as long as she's happy and healthy, it's all good

All my hamsters have open bottomed houses on top of very deep piles of fitch bedding with toilet paper to shred up.

They all love to burrow nice and deep and to make nice little stashes of food while they are at it!

Yes mine I bought a wooden house, a giant coconut, a camper van and a giant straw ball and she still takes her bedding out and would rather sleep by her wheel!

It's fine if she likes a big pile of bedding I find Syrians like larger houses. Ours would ignore a small house but liked the bigger ones because he could build a really big nest inside it. I also found putting a bendy bridge over the door attracted him to nest in the larger house as it made it dark inside and had a tunnel entrance

Agree with Flower Fairy - a house is best open underneath and on top of a good deep layer of substrate (5 to 6" or more) so they can bury hoards in the house and burrow down.

You could try a shoebox house. It's a good size. Cut the bottom out of a shoebox and a hole in front for a door. The lid can be a lift-off roof so you can check inside without taking the house out, so her nest doesn't fall apart. And a bendy bridge tunnel over the door

If she's cold she'll soon move inside

Inky started out in a not-that-great bit of plastic that was shaped to look like a house. Then she moved into a nest out in the open. Finally, she decided to move into her Trixie digging box, where she has remained ever since. It effectively functions, now, like a large open bottomed house that's filled with Fitch that she shapes to her own desire.

Unless her behaviour has suddenly changed, I really wouldn't worry about it.

Larry-Jasper has never ever slept in a house in his life. He much prefers choosing a spot and tunnelling down to build his own nest in the bedding. Some hamsters naturally prefer building their own homes with the option to change it at any point. I wouldn't worry about it.

Heaven likes to sleep out in the open by her wheel. At first I gave her lots of toilet tissue but I bought a bag of eco shredded nesting material. I dumped alot of it on Heaven while she was in her nest. So she didn't know what is was & of course she woke up. Next day she was in a huge nest. She has an igloo but prefers next to the wheel.

She wasn't mad at me,

I like the idea of deep bedding FF too.
