How about a detolf? Just a lid to make Costs $60 though and needs to stand on something (some people get a couple of Lack tables).

Does that place I linked sell the Iris bin online?

There is this cage - which is big but not cheap - about 780 square inches. No meshing needed as it has 1cm bar spacing. It's called the Ferret and Rat Kit cage, but is known as the 100cm Mamble in the Uk. It's very tall though so could do with a full level ideally - just a piece of wood with a bit cut out at one corner for an access ladder and screwed in through the bars (again a hardware store would cut it to size).

Alternatively, if you have enough shelves and set it up carefully you could manage without a full level. I wouldn't use this cage for a dwarf hamster though due to the height. Unless you had a full level.

As RH says the Zoozone 2 is good as well (perspex tank style) but not sure if it's easily available in the US. A lot of people seem to go for a 40 gallon breeder tank when Petco have their dollar a gallon sales.

Didn`t realise you were in the US, sorry. I would still look for a similar Zoozone style cage though. Not sure if the Samba/Simba(?) is available over there? The tank that has the two grills over the top? I remember seeing it a while ago but can`t remember who the manufacturer is.

How would I connect the two storage boxes?
Storage boxes are easily connected by cutting large holes(but not the whole sides)into both containers on the sides that face each other. This would be extremely easy to do with the same exact tool that makes it easy to cut holes into lids and mesh them when making bin cages, which is a wood burning knife. These are cheap tools, considering you can get one for $13 at Walmart which will last more than just the bin project and is a great investment for bin cage making,DIY toy making, and more.To keep the bins attached, you just use zip ties to zip tie the bins together. It's very similar to meshing a bin lid,but this is on the side and doesn't use mesh!

On the note of a 40 gallon tank, that can potentially cost you $80 if you buy the tank and lid in store. It will also be extremely heavy, and the ventilation won't be anywhere near as good as a DIY project could be.The same issues that come with tanks apply to the Detolf, and while the Detolf would be ideal for a dwarf hamster it is still far more limited in placement which unlike alternative options cannot be changed.

I've already looked for Zoozone (both models). I haven't been able to find any yet for a decent price in the USA though...

It wouldn't be cheap in the US,nor is it really that cheap in the UK anyways! You really can't beat the value of a good DIY though, even something as simple as expanded bins.Plus, the Zoozone is an extremely limiting cage which would have very limited potential for Syrian hamsters especially those who need lots of space.

The Iris bin is also available at places such as Walmart and they're very cheap there too!

Ok, thanks for all your help!
I think I'll use the IRIS holiday box, then either use mesh or the shelving...probably the mesh, since I can grab it from the local Home Depot.
Thanks again!

You can always expand later on if necessary, which is the great part of using bins instead of storebought cages and tanks!Just keep an eye on your hamster's behavior and watch out for any stereotypic behavior or obsessive behavior, like obsessive digging and such.

My partner has just finished converting a guinea pig cage to a hamster cage. He's put mesh on the outside, but has secured it in various places all over. I can't even get a finger between the two layers.
The bars on the guinea pig cage are 1cm apart, and so is the mesh. He has very cleverly put the mesh on so that there are now half cm squares all over.
We did this because we had all the material to hand and didn't have to buy anything.... only his time and blood, which he spilled wiring the two together.
Everything is now smooth and safe for when I can find a Syrian.
They seem to be an endangered species here in the Valencia region!
