Default Wheel issues with the newbie

Not long ago I adopted a new girl, a three legged Syrian hamster. She's now been named Trinity and her hip has healed perfectly, the fur is almost completely grown back too.Taming is coming along great, she's such a sweetie and hasn't (touch wood!) given me even the slightest nip. I'm in love hehe!

So, the issues.

She had a 12" Flying Saucer but demolished it relatively quickly. The spindle basically turned to dust. There was just a small part left holding it in but the rest was gone. She hadn't chewed it, it had just worn away. It wasn't brand new but I wonder if it's the way she runs that wore it down like that? She now needs a new wheel and I'm stuck as to what to get. She gets around great, even bar climbs, but I'm still cautious about what wheel to get her. Hesitent to get her another FS, both my other Syrians have Trixie wheels, I like them because they're good value for money and a good size but I wonder if it would be a bit narrow for her and rub on her hip/stump/side as she gets bigger? I could get a SS but heard that they've changed a bit and aren't that great anymore? Can anyone confirm that? I don't want to get a wooden wheel as she pees in her wheel

Glad Trinity is heeling amd coming on well. Love the name! I've no experience with a ham with special needs but I like the sound of an enclosed wheel for safety. I have an 11" Wodent wheel (senior) for one of my Syrians but if you're concerned about the depth I believe the 12" Wodent wheel (the wobust) is much deeper. I think Serendipity had one for Charlie at one point. Also it might be worth checking out the thread for Stumpy, one of Amyhague's past hams and seeing what she might have used.

The silent spinners have changed, I haven't tried one of the newer design but a lot of people do seem to have problems with them now, I agree with velma that an enclosed wheel would probably be safest & easiest for her to use, either the wodent wheel or the silent runner.

Flying saucers take up a lot more floor space. I'd avoid the Silent Spinners too. Silent Runners make for a great wheel. They have a 12 in size and a 9 in size. You can clip onto the bars of free stand. The good think about the Silent Runner is that there is no axel in the middle like the Wodent Wheel but I like the WW too

Thanks everyone!

Are Silent Runners available in the UK? Not heard of them before.

You can order them on exoticnutrition.com in the US I know you can order them in the UK too but I'm not sure which web-site. You could PM Cypher as she has one, Serendipity too. You won't be unhappy with the wheel. If you ever need replacement parts, they send them out free of charge. I needed replacement bearings on one wheel as the wheel stopped spinning, but the 2nd wheel hasn't had any problems. I think to have a problem with the Silent Runners is rare.

They're available from the sugar glider shop & sometimes maybe on ebay.

Two of my syrians have silent runners. They are lovely wheels. Hope you find one to suit Trinity.
