I would hate to mesh a cage! It's frustrating when there are good big cages - except for the bar spacing. That 1m square rabbit cage is a find though Amityville. Loads of floorspace.

Actually Ferplast make a hamster version of that first one you linked. It's hard to get hold of and not cheap. And I'm not sure it would work as well as a conventional cage, because it's not as big. I thought about it for a holiday cage but decided a conventional cage with the bars and base nested was more space-saving. Plus it's not cheap.

That's so true. I like the one you posted serendipity. It's a bit like the rabbit one I originally posted. Looks like it's discontinued. In terms of plastic cages: the Duna multi and the zoozones which are better quality? I know plastic has a tendency to craic if not careful. Also people with the zoo zone mesh the lid but with it being plastic and if there will not be too many opportunities to reach the lid is it necessary?

Yes it's necessary unfortunately on the Zoozones. Even if you have minimum substrate and everything low down, hammies can scale wheels and water bottles and find all kinds of footholds. Although possibly with a small dwarf hamster and everything very low you might be ok, but one of the big advantages of the Zoozones is their lovely deep bases for a good depth of substrate so hammies can dig tunnels. So to me it would seem a bit pointless to have a perspex tank and keep everything low as the depth of substrate is something that is so beneficial to hamsters. I guess it's either meshing a Zoozone and having deep substrate for tunneling, or getting a taller tank so you can have the deep substrate, but even in taller tanks hammies have been known to climb something and escape!

Meshing a Zoozone lid is a much simpler exercise than meshing a whole cage though. There is also the maxi duna multy which is almost the same as the Zoozone 2 and that has 7mm bar spacing so doesn't need meshing. It's approx 1cm lower on paper, but the corners are a better shape so it's easier for tall wheels really. But then it costs a lot more than a Zoozone 2 (about £40 more!).

Yeah you do want a decent depth of substrate. Ugh why are cages so expensive. Last night fudge was being a wee tinker. I decided to put his level back in his Alaska and he started climbing the bars, chewing them and throwing himself off the bars. Before I put the level in he never was interested or maybe he does and it never wakes me. Though I don't know how for it was a wild racket! I like wire cages but hams just love climbing and chewing the bars which I don't like and don't think is good for them. Yes he's in my room so I was awake half the night but even if he wasn't I still wouldn't like to know that's what he was at. I had to remove it as some of the falls didn't sound that good :/ which is annoying as I want to be able to use the level that comes with the cage so I'm making use of it.

Cheeky monkey still at it even though I removed platform but at least he only had deep substrate to fall on. Hopefully he'll settle tonight and not do it. I couldn't be mad at that face

Maybe he just got a bit stressed by the change. Maybe hide some treats in different places and distract him a bit

Yes,cages are expensive, but only in terms of initial cost.A lot of cages are sturdy enough to last several life times for hamsters,so the cost is reduced over time in a way

I love looking at hamster cages. I have loads. Most with hamsters inside. My fave is the alaska. The doors are so easy to open and such a good size. A 115cm alaska would be perfect oh with a clear base.

That's prob what it was serendipity. As mum always says you buy good you buy once! Yeah I do too though it can always make you dissatisfied feeling you want a better cage than the one you have. Yes I have the Alaska at the moment it is good. Would be better though if the wire spacing was 7mm to help deter bar chewing and the platform wasn't plastic as its noisy.

I know how you feel I bought an 80 x 50 cage for Charlie and it seemed huge and I loved the front opening door (Savic Mickey 2XL) and it wasn't too high so no worries about fall risks (38cm high). But - the low height caused issues with wheel sizes and substrate depth, and the cage never seemed quite big enough. But I did love it and just kept wishing it was 2" taller, 100cm instead of 80cm and with a 25cm clear base lol! Or even just wider and taller with the standard base. The 7mm bar spacing does make it harder for them to bar chew, but not impossible. Charlie went through a short spate of it after a big change when we went away on holiday for 10 days. Luckily it stopped after a couple of weeks of ignoring and going to bed early.

Maybe if the platform is an issue - being noisy and not particularly stable perhaps, it might be better to leave it out. Hammies do get stressed if something major gets taken out of the cage or the layout changes significantly sometimes. I found it a lot when Charlie was younger - he accepts a bit of change better now he's older but I tend to do it when he's out of sight and hearing or he gets stressed hearing me doing things to the cage! So he just gets the finished result.

If you're wanting to upgrade though, you could maybe get some money back by selling the Alaska after getting something else. Although because they're only £33 ish new it probably won't go for more than £20 but it's still £20 towards another cage rather than spending more money on platforms etc to get the Alaska right. I ended up going for a large flat roofed house instead of a platform when my plastic one got too annoying and the ladder broke! But the cage was lower so less of a drop onto the house roof.

How about a detolf? No bar chewing. Only costs £40 (although you need bits of wood and mesh to make a lid). From the sound of your hammy I'm not sure a Zoozone would be right for him. They have good floor area but not much height for levels and he sounds like an active energetic climby kind of hammy! With a detolf you wouldn't have bars to be chewed like in a cage, and the extra floor area would make up for not having higher levels.

For now just try and make his Alaska cosy. Stick with the shelf and maybe prop it up underneath with something so it doesn't wobble so much. Give him lots of substrate and plenty of hidey places - small cardboard boxes would do, so he doesn't feel exposed and to add a bit of interest. And maybe save up a bit and daydream about the ideal cage!
