Deep Enough Substrate?
I've been setting up my Alaska cage for the new arrival and, as I'm sure many of you are aware, that the Alaska base is quite deep and the cage itself is quite tall. At first I thought this wouldn't be a problem, that I would just put lots and lots of substrate in. But I've put a whole bale of Carefresh Confetti in, and it just doesn't seem deep enough? If I have to buy more substrate I will, I was just wondering if there is any way around this, or if you think that one bale is enough?
I would really appreciate your help!

Hi I have the Alaska cage, I buy the £6.50 carefresh (Ooppss an't remember how much comes in it.) And one of there barely overs the floor. I have to buy at least 2 - 3 for her to be able to dig. Hopefully i'll be able to buy some itch bedding soon.

Re: Deep Enough Substrate?
There's usually about 3-4in in my cages which seems to work out okay for my hamsters. I'm not sure how much that would take in terms of bags if Carefresh but the Natural variety of Carefresh comes in larger bags than the colours or confetti and was available in Pets at Home stores at one point for about £20.

I couldn't see any bigger bags at Pets at Home when I went today To be honest I thought one 10L was going to be plenty. I will have to have a better look next time! Thanks

Re: Deep Enough Substrate?
I don't have an Alaska as I use tank style cages and my female Syrian, Cleo, likes a big underground nest so It's pretty deep in one corner. I might try Fitch at some point in the future but at the moment for all three of mine I use Carefresh or shavings or often a mix of both. I prefer the Carefresh but the shavings are a lot cheaper so it's a good way to bulk it out. Sometimes I'll put a layer on the bottom under the Carefresh, sometimes I'll zone the different areas but mostly I just mix it all in together. Might be worth trying to give you more depth?

Re: Deep Enough Substrate?
Do Fitch deliver to Wales? If so that might be a much better idea, even if you had to pay a lot more for shipping,as you get a better product value and can even order massive amounts if possible so you don't have to pay for shipping as often as you could if you ordered Carefresh frequently instead(especially with the cost of Carefresh).

Re: Deep Enough Substrate?
Fitch deliver to most of the UK and the price displayed is inclusive of delivery costs unless you live in the Scottish Highlands, Parts of London and the Isle of Wight when there will be a surcharge. There's a list on their website of which postcodes this includes.
Here's their site: https://www.fitchrecycling.co.uk/ani...t-bedding.html
It is a nice substrate if you can store the larger bales but availability can be a bit hit and miss but it'll say on the site if they're out of stock.

Re: Deep Enough Substrate?
I'm sure you won't regret it if you do!
It really is a good substrate & really economical in the long run.
