Re: 10 gallon tank?
I think you'd need to go bigger for most hams & probably mice too.
As Fluffagrams says some hams are happier in smaller cages/tanks, I do have one ham like that but he's still in an 84L bin not sure what that would be in gallons (about 22?) but with a house, wheel etc in it even that is quite small!

Re: 10 gallon tank?
If DIY stuff is a bit frightening, bin cages are easier than cages that involve making wood lids and whatnot. Mine was quite easy to make and my ham seems happy. I think bin cages are better than tanks anyway because you can put windows on the sides as well as the top so there is more ventilation. You don't want your hamster living in a greenhouse.

Re: 10 gallon tank?
If you are from the USA , take advantage of Petco's Dollar per Gallon sales on tanks ! (in store only I believe) but you can get a nice 20 gallon tank, for only 20 dollars. you'll have to buy a mesh lid separately or DIY one, there are lots of tutorials on youtube.
I myself have a 40 gallon All Living Things Terrarium from Petsmart, I got it for 99 dollars ... pricey but amazing. It came with a locking mesh lid that has a small locking door in it so you can place food in and such without taking the whole lid off. In my opinion, bigger is always better when it comes to small pets. I had to save up a bit , but it's worth it.

Re: 10 gallon tank?
Please can we remember that there is no such thing as 'one size fits all' when it comes to the suitability of cage sizes. Posts about the suitability of certain cages are the opinion of the person that has posted and do not represent any kind of rule.

Re: 10 gallon tank?
I think that a 10 gallon tank is definitely too small, unless your hamster has certain health problems, or hates space. Dwarves generally need bigger cages than Syrians, contrary to what their size might suggest. From what i know about mice it could be suitable, if you can fit all the things they need in there.

Re: 10 gallon tank?
Thank you Renlikescake! I may have a few questions for you Where can I get a screen top? Can I sprinkle baking soda in the cage to help keep down the smell? What size wheel to I need to get? Any good mouse food brands? Does it have to be any special kind (besides not to get the kind with wire squares)? And any other tips or advice for a new mousie owner? Thanks again!

Re: 10 gallon tank?
I'll see about getting a bigger cage for my mouse. What about the things you can buy to put on top of the aquariums? Do those work well?

Re: 10 gallon tank?
Sorry for so many replies, but I also have another question. I want a female mouse, because everyone says that males smell, and I prefer female animals in general. Do I have to have a friend for my female? One of the main reasons I don't want a pal for it is because if one dies, I don't want the other to die of depression, and I don't feel a trio would be best for me right now (finances, caging, and just being a first time owner). Although, I really do want what is best for the animal.

Re: 10 gallon tank?
I'm not an expert on mice but I believe they do better in groups rather than alone. Two or three maybe.
I think people do use 10 gallon tanks for mice - according to the calculator on this web page a 10 gallon tank could be ok for up to three mice - but I think it's a minimum size.
Mouse Cage Calculator
It's considered the minimum for a hamster by the ASPCA but most people would consider it too small for a hamster. A 40 gallon breeder tank is a popular size for a Syrian Hamster and a 30 or 40 gallon tank popular for a dwarf hamster in the US (assuming you are in the US?).
Personally I wouldn't get the pet to suit the tank you have. ie I wouldn't get mice just because the tank is ok for them - unless you have really looked into keeping mice. I believe some people can find the smell quite strong with mice and more so than for a hamster.
Bicarbonate of soda wouldn't be good - it could cause serious health issues if ingested. Maybe contact Rene...... for more info on mice

Female mice have to be kept in groups, but male mice should not be kept together. That is the general agreement in the US,as male mice almost never get along well and keeping them together is just not safe as they can and will fight to the death(at least, males will).
