Rabbit cages are another option. They're extremely cheap usually, even for something around 100 x 50,which is a big benefit. You could get two cages for the price of one cage and all you'd have to do is mesh the cages,or just get one,it's the same exact reasoning regardless.

Yeah - except meshing cages is a horrible job and you then can't see into the cage properly because of the mesh...... I've 'been there and done that' lol and would never recommend it tbh. The hammies were happy in it but I got fed up of catching myself on the mesh and also got fed up of not being able to see into the cage.

It is an option though you have to factor the cost of mesh sheets in - they aren't all that cheap. I think I got the Borneo cage after getting rid of the meshed rabbit cage lol.

Ps - you could also look for an Exo Terra second-hand - as they have front opening doors you could put a Duna on top of it. I got one second-hand recently for a fantastic price.

Doing this has worked really well for my Syrian hamster xx

Duna Multys in the medium size are really good value and if you're prepared to move them to access the one underneath they could be a better option.

The Hamster Heaven (without using all the silly add on bits!) would be just as good as the Mickey & is a good size for a dwarf that's not space shy, the bar spacing should be fine for a robo too.

Your shelves sound great for a syrian but robos (& Russians) are so good at fall off things, good at going up but useless at coming down so I'd still be wary, I had a Chinese in my borneo with lots of ledges & hammocks & it worked really well but I'd be very hesitant with most dwarf hams.

I've used it for a Robo' too .........I've kept every species of hamster so I am knowledgeable about Dwarf hamsters etc. I've already said that Dunas would probably be the better option anyway?!

I would not personally be confident keeping a Robo' in a Hamster Heaven - I used to think that bar spacing was fine but having had mice escape from this kind if bar spacing (Savic Freddy - same bar spacing as a Hamster Heaven) I personally prefer narrower bar spacing these days. Each to their own. I have kept Dwarf hamsters in them but I'd not risk a Robo' in one though no doubt others have done so with no issues. I'd have said they were fine for mice until I had an escape - and this was a fully grown mouse not a baby.

ETA: I never used all the stupid tubes etc on a Hamster Heaven lol - just a pain to clean etc!!

ETA2 - I don't have a pic of of how I set up the Borneo - I had shelves either side with a home-made long wooden shelf that was a little bit lower than the plastic shelves between them that ran all the way along the back of the cage. Along with a good thick layer of shredded cardboard bedding of course.

I wasn't doubting your knowledge Mollie, sorry if it came across like that, just trying to make things clear to others reading the thread.

I've had Chinese in the HH, bigger than a robo but at a young age very slim & they've been fine with the bar spacing, I think mice are a lot slimmer than robos aren't they? Never kept mice... yet!

I think we're all agreed that the duna multy would be a good option

Mice can get out of just about anything. They're about the size of robos, just more agile and slimmer!I don't think the spacing would be a problem for robos though

My research into mice bar spacing was they can get through anything bigger than 7mm. Hence getting a 7mm bar spacing cage to keep mice out Just in case! Having said that mice can push the bars apart unless they are very stiff bars (apparently). 6mm is usually considered the only safe bar spacing for mice I think.

Sorry - totally off topic there lol! As Mollie says each to his own. I would worry too much having a Robo in a cage with anything bigger than 7mm bar spacing in case they tried to get out and got stuck or something.

Anyway - a few options mooted - depends on the space available maybe or rearranging something. You can't really go wrong with a Duna Multy though, as Mollie says, unless it's a Robo who needs more space and then a maxi duna multy.

I was looking into rabbit/guinea pig cages! Unfortunately I can't find any suitable ones near me, and postage on top of the cage cost would be well out of my budget. I'm almost certain I could fit a Savic hamster heaven on top of the bookshelf- I've heard it's a good cage, and it seems to be a decent size. Anyone know what the bar spacing is exactly? From the sizes of my robo's heads I doubt they'd be able to get through anything smaller than 1cm, if the bars don't have any give.

The HH bar spacing is 1cm, if it helps visualise it I can just about get the tip of my little finger through but that's about it! There is a bit of a larger gap on the top where the door which would be for the penthouse is but a few cable ties would sort that just in case of any monkey barring, do you have to fully close the front door, there's sort of two positions for closing & one leaves a bit of a gap but that's pretty self evident when you do it.
