New cage

I have fallen in love with a new cage i was thinking about getting for Gill.

But I really don't like the colour of this cage, is it possible to paint it in a safe way, fx spray paint? Of course it's important that it's non toxic.

You might be able to paint the wooden parts with pet safe paint. The cage is quite tall for hamsters. They climb up but often just drop or jump down, which can cause injuries. A lower cage with more floor space is better if you can find one. The cage may be ok if extra full levels are added.

If the base is plastic, you can add paper on the outside. Like wall paper or wrapping paper.

They are lovely cages, I do think some of the range are too tall though, I prefer the lower ones like this.
I don't think there is an easy non toxic way to paint plastic, you usually have to prime it first or the paint just peels off, I quite like the colour though!

I want to put the substrate up very high as shown = more place to dig and make tunnels.
The shelf will cover just over half the length. It will also have an edge all the way around so there can be some substrate on the shelf. The shelf on top of that, will be the same just put in the other side. This way he can't really fall all the way down. The interior that comes with the cage I wont be using.
But instead put lots of wine branches, wide bridges as a slim one will increase the risk of him making a wrong step and then he will get hurt.

Still convinced its a bad idea?

I don't think it's a bad idea at all, you're obviously considering all the safety aspects & I'm sure you could make it work.

After seeing your drawing. I think it could work and be a nice cage setup. You have thought about the fall risks and the deep substrate will be nice too.

The wire spacing are 1,2 cm but that is just a tiny bit to wide for a robo right? or is it safe? I believe I remember something like 1 cm.....

It is too wide,but you could mesh the cage if you really want to have this exact one
