How often do I need to clean a detolf?
So I bought my Syrian, Cookie, a detolf yesterday, and he absolutely adores it! I'm so happy he likes it!
He pees and poops in roundabout the same area, so how often should I need to clean it?

Generally with a cage around that size every 6 months for a full clean is more than enough, but you do need to do regular spot cleaning otherwise the odor will build up especially with the Detolf being a tank style cage so it can only have one place for airflow!

If you spot clean daily when you refill the water and food, you should only need to do a thorough clean out and change all the bedding once a month

The detolf needs to be cleaned every month with spot cleans every few days

Re: How often do I need to clean a detolf?
A full clean would be one where you change out all the substrate completely, where spot cleanings you just remove urine and poop without taking out a lot of the substrate.
The Detolf would not need to be cleaned every month with deep substrate and honestly there is absolutely no reason to clean any cage that size so often. However, cages over a square meter in actual floor space can go up to a year for full cleans!

Considering I gave his old cage a complete clean every two weeks, which was less than half the size, that seems like a very reasonable point!

You put in half of the new substrate in the cage in one month and leave the other bit of the substrate in. The cage would get too dirty if you cleaned it every 6 months the cage would get too dirty even with spot cleans.

Re: How often do I need to clean a detolf?
You really don't need to do full cleans or even half cleans every month with a syrian, unless they burrow a lot & bury things in the substrate.
Just spot clean, clean the top layer if you think you need to & maybe do half the cage every few months at most.
