Default Help, squeaking wheel is driving us mad!

Rosie silent spinner is squeaking very loudly at night. Its so bad it keeps my hubby awake. I've tried it out of the cage but it only seems to squeak when Rosie is on it. I've moved it around in case a different angle helps but that's not worked. Has anyone got any ideas.im taking it you can't put anything like oil in it to stop it. I can't get to a shop until next week so any ideas would be welcomed.thanks

Order a Silent Runner wheel, they're very good.12 inch for Syrians,9 inch for any dwarf species and it is even light enough for robos!

A lot of pet store wheels end up being less than ideal, usually due to being very loud in the case of the Comfort Wheel,or they just don't move at all when it comes to Silent Spinners. Then you have Wodent Wheels, which aren't great either. They can be loud, and their stand is nowhere near as safe as the Silent Runner stand.Of course, there are ones which are just plain dangerous and should never be purchased at all like open sided plastic wheels(both sides are completely open and the stand is similar to most wire wheels) which can trap and injure hamsters, mesh wheels and barred wheels which can injure hamsters and cause bumblefoot, and wheels which are just too small which cause severe back problems over time.

I've not heard of a silent runner where would I get one from. Rosie is a roborvoski so would a 12 inch be the correct size. She has a silent flying saucer wheel at the moment so I'm taking it the silent runner is upright?

Silent Runner wheels are upright This is actually a great thing, since they allow a more natural running pattern.Flying saucers do cause side arching due to the way hamsters are forced to run on them, and they can cause injury if hamsters go flying off of them unlike a wheel which has an enclosed front like the Wodent Wheels and Silent Runners.

You have to get Silent Runners online.

In the UK,they're here:Silent Runner 9"

However in the US you get them here:Silent Runner Wheel 9 inch (SMALL) - Silent Runner Wheels

The 9 inch is actually good for a robo!Posted at the same time

Thankyou. I'm in the UK so will get one from the sugar glider place. I didn't realise that the flying saucer wheels were bad for them. I certainly don't want anything that can harm my girls. I know exactly what you mean by flying off the wheel in the flying saucers. Rosie certainly used to do that when she had the wheel at first. I will save up for one for Daisy as well. (My other robo)

While waiting for the wheel to arrive you can place a small drop of any Veggie oil(I use Olive Oil) on the axle of the noisy wheel and it may lower the squeak. If it is a 12 inch SS however they have been known to not spin easily and your little Robo may not be able to work her wheel.

I prefer Wodent Wheels but they are becoming very hard to find at reasonable prices in the UK and are almost not found at all in the USA these days.

I'm not sure about the new design silent spinners but with the old smaller ones the squeak is usually easily fixed with the oil.

I think the problem with side arching in saucers is more to do with if the size is right or not. Much like a too small upright wheel causing back arching. I didn't have a problem with my robo in his flying saucer because it was a medium so he could run straight up in it. He preferred a faster wheel but had no problems with a saucer. But they do take up more floor space though.

I don't find my wodent wheel (for my Syrian) noisy, it's a bit of a pain to take apart but oiling it is dead easy. I personally wouldn't have had one for my robo though as he pee'd in his wheel so easy clean was the way forward! I think for a closed wheel the silent runner is meant to be very easy to take apart but only from what I've seen on other members threads, I don't have one of my own.

I've not had a problem with a squeaky silent spinner but as already stated, you can try rubbing a bit of oil by the axle. If it's only squeaking when she's on it, are you sure it's not rubbiing against something? Does it tip back or down or anything which might be making it squeak against something? I know before now I thought I had a noisy wheel and it turns out it was just rubbing against the side of the tank where I had it a but close and it tipped back slightly.
I hope you and hubby get some sleep soon!

Thanks for the answers. I will definatly try the oil tonight.(she was very noisy last night) I have a medium flying saucer which I think is the correct size but I have had a problem before which is why I'm keen to try something differnt. This is my second wheel for Rosie the first was too stiff so I got rid of it and tried every wheel in the shop to make sure they span fast. I even had the girl in the shop helping me! I have checked and it's not hitting anything. I did wonder is it needs to be on a flat surface at the moment it's on about 5 inches of carefresh (she does like her tunnels. That being said Daisys wheel is on the same amount and there's no problem. Before I put it on is sunflower oil ok as that's what I have at home.
