Default Cage advice for an active Syrian!

Hi everyone!

I'm planning to upgrade my hammy's (Arthur) cage in a couple of months and could with some advice. Arthur is a high-energy Syrian who loves to climb, burrow, chew and escape! He keeps me on my toes

What do people think is best for this type of ham? Lots of floor space or levels and places to climb? Or both?

I found this cage on eBay. What do people think of it? I'd be grateful for other cage ideas, too.

XXL Wooden Cage Villa Hamster Mouse Ferret Pet Small Animal Factory seconds | eBay

I like the idea of the Detolf but am worried that the lid won't be very secure. Arthur managed to push his current (wood/mesh) lid aside one evening and escape. I now have to weight it down with books.

Thanks very much!

For a bit more you could get a square meter cage from Amazon and all you'd have to do is mesh the cage over

https://www.amazon.co.uk/LITTLE-FRIE...24242&sr=1-255

It's the absolute cheapest wire cage considering the size.Anything smaller ends up being a terrible value unless you really want to go through the hassle of converting two wire cages into one huge cage with a large solid melamine base underneath, and that honestly is a lot more work than just simply meshing a cage over.

Another option would be 4 Lack side table units all in one floor space. This would also be extremely easy to do,but the wire cage option would mean no building doors or lids so it is a bit easier to have the premade square meter cage. However, the Lack tables are much cheaper and they're even a better value than a Detolf!

Here are a few links to some fab cages! You could attach hinges to the lid on the detolf so it would be harder to lift

Is your hamster a big chewer?
What cage is your hamster in?

Great deals on small pet cages at zooplus: Alexander Small Pet Cage

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dtDdjWtIG58

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Zoozone-620.../dp/B002USE0JM
WOULD NEED WIRE MESH OVER TOP AS BAR SPACING IS TOO LARGE.

Mamble Rat / Hamster Narrow Bar 100cm Cage - Little Pet Warehouse

KALLAX Shelving unit - birch effect - IKEA
SEARCH ON GOOGLE FOR THE CAGE INSTRUCTIONS

If you did choose the wooden one you would need to Plastikote it. If your Hamster is a big chewer the wooden cage would not be advised

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Plasti-kote...sed+plastikote

The problem with the wooden cage is that it looks like you would need to have shallow substrate and you need to have deep substrate

Hope I helped

I forgot Little Pet Warehouse also sell that square meter cage! It's a rabbit cage, same exact cage as the one I linked previously, but they also do sell the cage there if you'd rather not get a cage through Amazon for some reason

Other than that though,it isn't really possible to find something at such an amazing size at a huge bargain like that.

Yes, and as for the huge floor space it would be ideal

For a ham that likes to chew & escape I would avoid any wooden cages like the one you linked to, it probably wouldn't keep him in long!

The Coco rat cage that was linked is very tall The height is actually 70 cm,not 54 cm as it would seem due to the misleading way that dimensions are given for the cage from what I've seen so far in two places.

Coco Rat & Hamster Cage with Platforms: Large 100x70x54cm - Little Pet Warehouse

Little Pet Warehouse gives the dimensions 100 cm for the length(across the cage),54 cm width or depth(back to front),and 70 cm height(top to bottom, obviously). That tall of a cage is a serious fall risk unless the cage is heavily modified, and even then for chewers it would be hard to have things such as hammocks and levels to prevent that since they'd just get destroyed and ingested which in the case of most hammocks(excluding seagrass)is extremely dangerous.

Speaking of dimensions, the Mamble 80 is often considered an 80 x 50 cage which is as far as I know untrue. The dimensions given are 80 cm length,43.5 cm width, and 50 cm height.
