Thanks so much for all the advice, everyone! Loads to think about.

Making a square meter Billy cage is always a great idea, plus you wouldn't have to get all 4 units to do so since you already have one It's better for those who don't have the width for something 100 cm wide, but can fit more of a long cage.

You could just buy one or two of the Billy extensions at a time and then when you have them all make the massive upgrade. It isn't the cheapest option, but it does look extremely nice!

I love the look of the massive Billy hack! The only problem is my wheel is too tall! I have the 12inch silent spinner and it's enormous.

Aw shame, you could try and find a way to extend the height... maybe get planks of wood and glue them to extend the height

You could attempt to make a wood and mesh topper style lid instead of a flat lid!Actually, barred cages can turn into toppers as well and that is something I've seen on German hamster information websites There would be a huge benefit from using barred cages, which is having the doors. You could just get some cheap secondhand cages though to use the doors on some topper style lids instead and then you would be able to make the top fit perfectly

I had a similar wooden cage, just an odd shape! Can't find a link to the exact one so attached a picture from when it was empty. It was great, Nelly loved it and loads of space to play around with layout etc, also could fill it with loads of substrate to dig (not that she cared for digging much!). She wasn't a wood chewer so didn't find she chewed it really.

Whereabouts are you in UK? I'm thinking about selling mine on if you are interested (Nelly is no more and its taking up space on top of my wardrobe), I have absolutely loads of wooden cage accessories which I would include too. Message me if you like

The detolf shelving unit is amazing! At 1.6 metres long, it's great value for £40! Just build it without the shelves, turn it on its side, and you're good to go!

You could also make a wider base and just use the glass panels from the Detolf and also make sides for that to make the cage go up to a square meter
