It is a matter of opinion really as there's no proof that saucers are harmful either in relation to spinning/neurological problems or from the running position.
Personally I prefer mine to use upright wheels but quite a few of my hams have had saucers either in addition to a wheel in the cage or in the play pen, they often seem to prefer the saucers for some reason but either way none have shown any ill effects from using them.
It is one of those topics that can get a bit heated but tbh I think it's just something we have to make a personal choice about & accept that there may be no right or wrong answer!

It should also be noted that German resources do say that enclosed wheels are better.The reasoning behind this is that the wheel itself is less of an open space,so the hamster is more sure of its surroundings.This is also very good for hamsters that are very small and running fast,for example a robo hamster in a 9 inch Silent Runner wheel wouldn't fly off the wheel and get injured like it could easily get injured in a more open wheel.
