Re: Sand bath for dwarf hamsters?
Children's play sand is the cheapest option, and it is safe as long as you at least bake it beforehand. You could also wash and sift it gently as well to get out any fine particles but I'd suggest hand sifting, and you have to be very gentle or you'll create more fine particles by crushing it with your hands if you aren't careful!
You can get a massive amount of sand through different places depending on where you live, and that is always a much more affordable option and you also wouldn't have to pay shipping which makes it more convenient as well.

All my dwarf hams have used their sand baths a lot, they dig, roll & do sometimes pee in it although my Russians have a separate sand tray to pee in & mostly have used that.

What types of places would it be available at? I was just thinking of purchasing some at Walmart. Is there a type of ingredient I should stay away from? Are the Sands used in bottle art okay, for example?

Could you get the Supreme one from Amazon in the US - it's on Amazon prime there - not sure if they'd deliver free to Canada - you'd have to put it in your basket and see

Just regular play sand is what you get!I've seen Home Depot sell natural variants, but as long as it is child-safe play sand it is okay to use once you bake it and all of that You should be able to get it at hardware stores, possibly toy stores or something like that, and Walmart or other general stores.
Not sure on the safety of bottle art sand, and I'd rather go with play sand anyways since it would probably be under stricter regulations since it is meant for children.

Re: Sand bath for dwarf hamsters?
What is the effect if you don't sterilize the sand, I am sterilizing it but what happens if you don't?

Re: Sand bath for dwarf hamsters?
You might introduce a bug population, which would be very frustrating to get rid of in a hamster-friendly way!Better to just take the extra precaution It's always good to get that information out there so thanks for asking!

Re: Sand bath for dwarf hamsters?
Play sand tends to have been washed and grounded to produce a more rounded grain so it's less likely to irritate a child's skin or eyes whereas most other types of sand on the everyday market will not have gone through this process. I'd imagine that Chinchilla sand will have gone through a similar process to make it safe for animals and therefore I'd only stick to the chinchilla sands or a sand specifically dassigned for use by children. I'd have thought that any good toy shop would sell it as well as larger supermarkets that sell outdoor toys.
My Chineseys don't seem to roll in their sand baths but love to either sit or dig in it. I remember last year when it was quite hot, I'd put some out for May and she just hopped in and sat there for a while to cool off.

Oh okay I see, so I'll stick to children's play sand. I'll try Walmart. I wanted to get the chinchilla sand bath, but the one everyone recommends would cost me $10 (not a problem here) plus $25 shipping (big problem here; it's unreasonable to pay 2.5 times the price of a product just for shipping)
