Get a hamster this week, is this cage okay for now?
Hello
I am hoping to get a hamster this week
i got all excited and set up the cage ready for when my new little friend arrives.
I know its not the biggest cage ever, but it is slightly bigger than it looks in the photos, plus i should hopefully get a bigger better one in the future. What do you think, is it okay for now?
Oh and im also going to get a silent wheel =]

I think it will be fine for a baby hamster. In a few months you can plan a bigger cage and wheel when he starts to grow.

Is it a FOP duffy cage? if it is, it's quite a good size.. Just a shame it's not a few inches taller so you can fit an 8" wheel in..

there are 2 different bases to the FOP duffy and this is the one that you can actually fit an 8" wheel in. I, unfortunately, bought the alternative base that doesn't fit an 8" wheel. It didn't matter in the end as the cage was too small anyway and i use it for a dwarf with a 6" silent spinner

yes it is a FOP, the cage length is 23 inches and its 10 inches high. so it would fit a big 8" wheel in, although i dont think i will need one that big lol

i went to get a hamster today..we went to sooo many pet shops! we having been driving all day to petshops around my area. no where had any! afew places did but they didn't stand out to me. we then went somewhere where they had a massive adult one! oh my god she was massive! i did like her but i was scared of her i felt bad, but my cage would have been to small for her anyway . Then they showed me some baby ones which were lovely but not ready till next week. so thought i would come back next week. But then we popped into another place and one of the staff recommended gettign a russian hamster as they are very friendly, as i think Syrians are rather unpredictable and spiteful (not all of them of course). so she showed me the ones that will be ready tommorow oh i fell in love straight away!!! this little one just sat in my hand for ages and was really happy to be held! this is what i want a friendly hamster im not afraid of touching. so im going back tommorow to get one! i thought russians were meant to live in pairs but she said its best not to as they fight so i agreed on getting one!
i cant wait for tommorow!!!!!!!
Oh and i told her that i have normal cage as i was concerned he would escape through the bars but she said it was not a problem and he should not get out, its only the really tiny hamsters like Robo's that escape. are you sure my cage will be suitble?

Re: Get a hamster this week, is this cage okay for now?
yes, the cage is suitable for a dwarf. You won't need to get a new one or a bigger wheel.
I think the dwarf is probably the best choice if Syrians scare you. The large female was the size that all Syrians will grow to (very quickly). I always feel sorry for the old ones cos no-one buys them.
Syrians are certainly not spiteful though. It's actually more likely to get a dwarf that bites than a Syrian.
Anyway, good luck with your new dwarfie. I hope you post lots of pics of him

gdgd thankyou, luckily i already have a mini silent wheel that i had a few years back, so wont need to get a new one
Ohh dont! i already feel awful for not getting the large Adult! i feel so bad as she must have been there for ages! i asked the lady in the pet shop "what happens if the adults don't get sold, do you just get rid of them?"
she was very nice and i believe her when she said. "no, they will stay here until someone wants them" so at least i know shes not just going to be destroyed, she also said lots of people like that hamster so hopefully someone nice will buy her.
But i despretly wanted a friendly hamster that i can handle, as all my hamsters before have been un-tame (due to me being young then, and to scared to try) but im 17 now and cant wait to tame up my new little Russian hamster.
I will definatley be posting pics x
