Cage Ideas ~Housing~
Hello!
So, in my cage for my hamster I feel like I can't find a way to use the upper space. In my old cage, it was wired and it had a little platform that she could climb up to, and she liked climbing up the tube too! Now, since I have a glass tank, I'm wondering how I can safely put in platforms! If you can find a good DIY youtube video please paste the link! That would be great! And ideas are always appreciated!
Thanks!
Lolo

Re: Cage Ideas ~Housing~
This platform looks quite good - but will probably need checking for safety like all the bark products. It's quite tall (21cm) so would stand above even a good depth of substrate. You'd need access up to it though - a tube or ladder or similar. I actually sent for one when setting up Charlie's cage but haven't used it. (Photo below)
Trixie Natural Living Shelter, 30 x 22 x 25 cm: Amazon.co.uk: Pet Supplies
These steps are similar and quite big - the top one makes a platform
Small Pet Steps: Free P&P on orders £29+ at zooplus!
Also people make platforms/levels out of Ikea Knuff magazine racks and put them on little dowel legs.
There are some photos of the Trixie platform and steps in tanks on the Kerry Terrarium photos on zooplus (picture 10 has one and an earlier pic has the steps/platform).
Pet Supplies at zooplus Online Pet Shop, Pet Food & Pet Accessories.
I also think the cork logs are good as they are also quite tall - it makes both a tunnel and a ramp up to a shelf (it's like a bridge as well as a tunnel). I got one recently for Charlie's cage. The 'small' one I ordered was massive - far too big, so I got one from rodipet and the sizes were as quoted. Just right. It's this one - it's about 20cm long and the internal hole size is about 6 or 7cm (outside the diameter is more like 10cm to 12cm).

If you get a platform set up you could use tubes as a ladder. Even cut a hole in the platform and have a vertical tub to climb up and down onto and off of the platform if your hamster can climb vertical tubes.

Re: Cage Ideas ~Housing~
Thanks! Would a shelf that would stick to the glass also work? Or, would that just be a bad idea?

I don't know about that I'm afraid - someone else who has a tank might I think it might be a case of constructing one with aquarium sealant.

I would worry about the shelf coming unstuck if it was held on by suction cups. The silicon sealent would be better. Or a platform with legs. You can make one or buy one ready made.

I think I'd prefer one on legs
