Starting to smell!
Hello. Well my little ones home is beginning to smell. I just changed the bedding this past Saturday. Could the bedding I'm using just not be very good at all? What does everyone suggest is the best bedding. Or how to help the smell. I have a sunfire breed

What size cage do you have and what bedding are you using? Also what country are you in, as available bed digs vary considerably worldwide.
If your cage is on the small side it will start to smell quicker than a big one. Is your hamster potty trained? Mine are both Syrians but I gather it can be harder to potty train a dwarf ham.

Re: Starting to smell!
I've found Russians easy to litter train (unlike my pesky Chinese!), she should have settled into peeing in one spot by now I would imagine so try a small tray of some kind filled with chinchilla sand (not dust) put it in the spot where she pees & put some soiled substrate on top & see if she'll pee there, you can then just remove the damp sand if she does.
Don't over clean the cage, just do spot cleans rather than full cage cleans which will just upset her by removing all her scent & encourage her to scent mark & pee even more.
No idea about substrates in the US though.

Re: Starting to smell!
I have her in a 40 gallon tank. And no she is not potty trained. I would have no idea where to get that sand. I live in the US. I was using a brand called carefresh. It didn't smell good at all when opening the bag.

You can try getting the sand from a local pet store or even on Amazon!

Re: Starting to smell!
This is the chinchilla sand most of us use in the UK, also available on Amazon in the US.
I think people in the US tend to use boxo, aspen & carefresh mostly but can't be sure.
Carefresh can smell a bit odd sometimes & it's not a favourite of mine but if you have little choice it's not bad.
Give your ham lots of shredded plain white toilet paper for nesting too.
As I said before it may not be your substrate that's the problem so much as over cleaning, how often have you been doing it?
Try the litter tray anyway & see if that changes things.
ETA There are a couple of different substrates worth looking at here, Kaytree & Oxbow I've never used them being in the UK but both look good & would be safe to use.

Re: Starting to smell!
Just one thing to watch out for in addition to cypher's great advice, if her wee smells especially strong with a kind of twang to it like nail varnish remover it can be a sigh of diabetes. There would be other signs of that as well though, there is info on this forum about it elsewhere. She would probably be drinking and seeing more than normal and maybe losing weight too.
