Default For those of you with sputniks

I have ordered one for Gopal (my new dark chocolate brown syrian). He is in the barney cage.

Shelf on the left, wheel on the right. Where would be a good place for the sputnik (can move wheel if needs be)?

Was considering one for Woodstock (older white syrian) but he is more into tunnels so santa paws will be getting him some of those instead, he doesnt really climb much these days.

Any ideas/inspiration to do with sputniks most welcome. Thankies.

I have 2 rat sized sputniks and rat tubes in Mocho's barney. I took this photo when he first moved in a few weeks ago. If it is not clear enough let me know and I will take more for you.

I would put the sputnik next to the shelf - or slightly overlapping it and above it slightly. So he can get into it from the shelf. It depends what size it is - if it's the small one I would hang it above the shelf. The large one, next to it. I have ours at the front of the cage, so one of the three sides is near the bars (so he can climb out of that side). You would need to make sure there was a soft landing under the third side in case he jumps out. I just put a tube next to our third side so he goes through the tube and out onto his house roof.

Its the pink and lilac one. His base is pretty much all substrate (fina card with fitch on top) which should be a soft landing if needs be.

I am so excited about getting it and seeing his reaction. Love the idea of tubes from it as well.

Coco that picture is nice and clear. Thankyou did you make that shelf under the sputnik?

Under the pink Sputnik? No. It is the upper level of the large size of the 2 storey cabin I bought from zooplus. He uses the roof of the house for rear entry/exit of the Sputnik. Then along the two rat tubes and then onto the roof of the house that comes with the barney. That sits on the shelf. From there a long narrow bendy bridge runs alongthe side of the cage bringing him down to the shelf at front left by his water bottle. The barney slope brings him down to the base. He sleeps in the downstairs of the big house.
He gets in and out of the grey Sputnik from the roof of the barney house which really acts as a shelf.

I found this photo that might help what I tried to describe.

In order to fit everything in and not block the top door, you really need to but shelf one side, wheel at the back and Sputnik on the opposite side to the shelf. The Sputnik has a pretty big footprint. To access them, Glowy has a small extra shelf/ledge between his two and he climbs up the other dies to access. He used to have the purple bendy tubes from p@h but chewed them to bits. Nibble has tubes running up to and between his sputniks.

I don't have a Barney but my cage is a similar depth (50cm) - the Barney is 52cm I think so a bit more leeway. If you had the set up like it is on the advert photo of the barney (ie shelf on the left) you would need to have the shelf low enough that the sputnik could go as far over to the left at the front as possible I think. i have mine front left in our cage, with a big wobust wheel behind it on the back wall and it does fit like that. The Wobust wheel is very deep too, so a standard wheel would still fit behind it. I drew a diagram of how I'd have wheel and sputnik in the Barney once, after looking at other peoples' set ups - but sometimes it's a case of jiggling things around and seeing what works when they're in the cage.

This photo I found (hope the owner doesn't mind me using it as an example), is the 100cm Barney. The wheel is the 29cm Karlie wheel on the back wall next to the deeper part of the shelf. At the front of the cage, where the shelf is narrower, the sputnik could sit either just next to or partly over the shelf, depending on how far over to the left it has to be so the single fastener (one of three) clears the top door. My sputnik is fixed so the two fasteners are at the front and the single fastener at the back (I'll add a photo of mine to show what I mean) - this allows more manoevrability for the placement of the sputnik with the top door.

So this is the one I saw

This is ours - you can see there are three fastener clips at the top - you can have two at the front and one at the back like a triangle. If the top of my cage was the Barney the sputnik would need to be further over to the left by about 2" probably, to avoid fouling up the top door. My cage is much lower than the Barney though - about 7cm lower - so the sputnik would sit higher and partly over the shelf on the left if the shelf was low enough.
