cage suggestion in the US
Just bought a black bear syrian hamster. The cage I bought is a generic mice-hamster-gerbil cage from Petco. I'm thinking it's not big enough, plus it uses tubes to access the platforms. I had purchased a rat haven cage, but it was too tall for the area I'm putting it, six inches too high. So any suggestions fior cages in the US.

i only know of 2 good cages in the US to suggest: the hagen zoozone or the jack 72... or making your own bin cage of course.

I agree with Bunsey. The cage you have is likely too small. The Zoozone is great but be aware you need to mesh the roof bars as the bar spacing is escapable without mesh.

Thhe Jack 72 looks nice, but doesn't seem to be available anymore. It also uses the tubes, so would that be safe. The Hagen might be an online purchase too.

One of the better cages availible in the USA is the SuperPet "rat" cage.. http://www.petsmart.com/product/inde...ductId=2753299..
It's not at all suitable for ratties, but is a decent size for a syrian ham.

Re: cage suggestion in the US
You used to be able to buy the Jack 72 at Target online, but it's not there anymore! Oh this is sad, another good hamster cage becoming more and more difficult to find. You are so right, about being unavailable! I've searched for the last 45 minutes and I can't find it anywhere, it's all out of stock!
The Zoo Zones are great cages and I have bought mine from eBay. There is a Zoo Zone 1 and a ZZ2, the latter is a really big cage at almost 4 ft wide. There are only two people that sell them right now, but they're both the same price. I've bought from one of them and had a good experience, they were also the cheapest with shipping and everything that I found. Meshing the roof really isn't that hard, I did one by myself in about 1 1/2 hours.

It's just some will require modification. You can bet any cage marketed for hamsters from Petco or PetSmart for a hamster is going to be too small.

No one locally has the Zoo Zones either. I saw a cage with metal bar platforms and ladders. This isn't good for hamsters, correct?

No it isn't suitable as the bars can damage their feet. Have you considered making a bin cage and attching it to your current one to give extra space?

Correct, they are probably only available online. I haven't seen them in any store. Bin cages are cheap and easy to make. You can be as creatve as you'd like with them as well and they are available everywhere!

Its something to think about, but they don't look that cosmetically pleasing.
